I went back and edited my post - I reread it and realized I was being a big mouth. "take a shower" "leave the lice in the van" "loud mouthed fool". Please accept my appologies. Sometimes I let my weak little ego get in the way of my communication.

And that is stupid, because my game aint so good, and even if it was - still no reason to be loud and abrasive.

Especially as I'm simultaneously inviting you here as a friend.

Too much rum! I cry my drunkenness!

    Thanks for the pleasant response.

LOL It's all good fun here for me. Sometimes I play rough but only to stir things up a bit.

      And for you Bodi;

      A quote. From Cooper's Commentaries.

"For men of understanding do not say that the sword is to blame for murder, nor wine for drunkenness, nor strength for outrage, nor courage for foolhardiness, but they lay the blame on those who make an improper use of the gifts which have been bestowed upon them by God, and punish them accordingly."

St. John Chrysostom (circa 341-410 A.D.), from "Treatise on the Priesthood,"
      via B.T. Carlin, M.D.

and an excerpt from a poem,

...ever remember that a sword is not strength,
Strength is the hand that holds it.
Ever remember that a sword is not power,
Power is the mind that commands it....

Even if your "sword" is just a bunch of empty hand techniques to strangle or deanimate your enemies.

        good quotes.

and Saint Chrysostom is correct. The rum was not the source of the drunkeness, and likewise, the drunkeness was not the source of my big mouth. But rather, I have a big mouth, and it is just as good at vulgarity as it is at excuse making for that vulgarity.

        regards.

                Hi guys,

I'm a newbie here...but what an excellent forum...
Right..about the street effectiveness of a particular martial art..hmmm..i think it's down to the individual...I am a FMA and Silat player myself...but there is hard to find a martial art which it will answer all the questions.I think in the street it's more to do with the person's mind set, adaptability and obviously, skills.
I believe that every single system of MA is lacking in something. But hey..AM is a human "invention" and no human on Earth is perfect...

                All the best.

Dude, thats some POWERFUL Qi.... Read this last night before signing off and that ONE LINE is STILL stuck in my head!

ACTUALLY I don't think it was any thing I did? Bodi has the good kong fu! He showed me the light and I confessed my candle was pretty dim untill it gets really close...
Portland Or. has a good deal to offer a wandering visitor. A good zoo, lots of historic points of interest (Lewis and Clark ish) Right across the river there's an old fort just off I-5 in Vancouver Wa.

East of portland (just up the River a bit) there's a neat waterfall just past Gresham(?) Or.

Did I ever mention I used to work in the restraunt equipment industry out of Vancouver, Wa? There was a big WW2 bomber on display years ago in front of one restraunt in Portland....wonder if it's still there?

The Taylor Freezer distributor for the North West US... They make the soft serve machines for PukeDonalds and Bugerqueen (TCBY, etc...)

Sorry, back to topic. When some folks talk about their old stomping grounds they don't really mean it. (stomping!)
BODI... How long has SBG been in Portland? I moved away back in '86 to work on a ranch in Paso Robles, Ca. I can tell it's time to go back up there and visit some old buddies! Got that itch in my feet again! I'm good to go...

                  Thanks again Bodiman! (seriously)

Rules limit the number of fighters in the ARENA at the same time. Rules limit the fighting to an empty hand game. Rules limit the targets you can attack and when you can attack them. Rules limit the amount of time you can continue to attempt your submission techniques. Rules do not allow your OPPONENT to keep fighting after you make him tap out...(or to fight again after he wakes up. ) Both Vale tudo and NHB use referees to stop a fight in the event that one COMPETITOR can no longer defend himself.

None of this is relevant on the streets.
Vale tudo is just a term used for TV marketing stuff.
In Brazil, vale tudo is not your us MMA event: it is anything goes between 2 opponents: no rules no protections!
Noe I am will not bother to go on about vale tudo because you are ignorant about it. try the mecca event in Brazil.
Now saying it is irrelevant to the streets is dum, if your so called silat fighters cannot even survive in a MMA or vale tudo event versus only one opponent: how can you seriously think they will be so deadly in the street?
Let me see a silat guy is deadly in the streets because his 'dirty' moves and multiples attackers scenarios/training makes him above of the average NHB fighters!
I thought the days of the deadly Ninjas stuff were over, I must be wrong!

Vale tudo is about two MA that want to sort out issues for good unlike your internet warrior forum stuff.
NO vale tudo has no rules, both teams might agree on some terms but the rules are volatile.
Look at the luta livre vs BJJ VT challenge under the Calson Gracie team when Luta livre wanted to show off when Rickson was absent in Rio (he was the US): lost five fights! Most of the winners are now the BTT.
                          The challenge was televised.
Like I said, my teammate had a vale tudo fight, 30 minutes before the fight he was told that headbutt and elbows will be allowed.
Like it or not, vale tudo challenge is about the best of 2 MA teams fighters.
If you think silat prepare a fighter even if he never fight for MMA, then VT or street fight will be really funny: like back in the ninjas days!
To add about Ninjas, the local Ninjas club trains in BJJ but do not compete with my BJJ team because they claims themselves as a pure MA, not a sport!
LOL, if you cannot hang in the sport BJJ.
what are gonna do in a real fight!
A VT fighing training is better than of your so called MA due to its volatile and realistic competitive rules.
NO other competitions MA format can prepare you better that VT for a street fight.
UNLES you want to say that the BTT, CHUTE BOX, GRACIES are no good in streetfight because they came from VT and fight in MMA with rules..therefore making not streetfight worthy unlike your silat fighters?

                            Hi guys,

I have to say...although I am a silat and kali player,a MMA training will benefit very much in a real combat situation these days.Getting used with taking punches and kicks when they come real time it's probably the most effective way to train.
So I would say...combining a Vale Tudo type of training with Silat/Kali..etc..it will be a very effective way to train with tremendous results.

                            Just my 2 cents.

I only said that sport fighting RULES and SPORTSMAN like CONDUCT with REFEREES and TIME LIMITS AND NO WEAPONS is not relevant to what I consider a dangerous life or death street fight...

I never say empty hand training is useless....

Just that a knife in your hand is better than nothing (in your hand) if you need it.

And that EMPTY HAND specialists should at least consider the possibility that your attacker(s) WILL be armed. That you will have no escape or exit route?
That there will be more than one of them? NAAAAHHHH, that could never happen in a real street fight?

Your Jiu-Jitsu is like a bullet proof shield, right? And it gives you the ability to take a gun away, RIGHT?

Okay then, I feel "dum".... trying to talk sense into some folks is such a waste.

                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The word Pentjak means: the body movements used in the training method and the word Silat means: the application of those movements or the actual 'fight'."

                              Cassimore Magda

                              Training..., and fighting..., imagine THAT!
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Somtimes, I think it would even be an advantage to have no weapon, if you really know how to fight, or have any training, the average dude tryin rob you with a knife isnt gonna take you down, most likely. True, anything COULD happen, he could be trained,(though unlikely) most guys who have a knife in their hand focus soley on that knife rather than using it as an extension of themselves. This makes them clumsy.... instead of having their whole body, which is a number of lethal weapons at their disposal, they have one weapon. I mean if you take the knife.... hes got nothing and hes scared, his game plan most likely didn't revolve around getting a knife taken away. Just throwing something out there.....
