  • BJJ often affiliated with smoking pot?

I've overheard several discussions now about "how most bjj players train and compete stoned," and how much pot is a part of the BJJ culture, but am fairly oblivious about it in my classes. I'm told that even many of the top bjj'ers smoke pot before tournaments... Urban legend?

Do smoking pot and training bjj go hand in hand? I've only trained with one guy who smelled like pot, and he never really put up any offense, just kept telling me how confused he was (I'm not making this up)...

Maybe I just didn't notice that the other people are stoned.

    So what's the scoop?

(if you can't tell I've had a pretty sheltered life... )

why the hell would they do that? i would think that would make them perform terrible because they would be zoned out

Sounds like urban legend if anything.

One could make the argument that so many young people (and not so young)do or have smoked pot that everyone who does anything smokes pot. Casual marijuana use is pretty normal.

How's about this for a news headline: "most reporters exaggerate stuff in order to come up with stories."

I've actually got a truly humiliating and bizarre, almost surreal story...
it has to do with a seminar for perhaps the best Muay Thai instructor in the country/world, and me, I guess, having an aroma of marijuanna around me...and him pointing it out to the class, and everyone getting a few stories and laughes out of the whole situation...

I love the guy, and he was nice enough to just crack some jokes and make mention of training seminars in Jamaica, and his visit to haight ashbury in the 60's, as well as going to woodstock...instead of insisting that the cops and swat guys in the class drag me to their cars and arrest me...they actually were laughing, and being very cool.

Needless to say....I no longer EVEN hang out with people who toke before going to a class.

actually ahom8e, some of this is true. i know more than a few people who smoke pot before training. in fact there are many top name people in bjj who smoke and compete, or used to. i heard pedro rizzo used to blaze and train and compete all the time.

the reason for this is because the marijuana makes some people much more relaxed and creative, allowing them to perform better and come up with crazy techniques. obviously this isnt for everyone, since some people who smoke bud cant control themselves and get giggly and stupid and confused. but yeah, i know some bjj'ers i train with who swear by it, and claim it improves there game. these people do well when we roll, and looking at their glazed over eyes i know they are high.

im sure this is more common in brazil than in the usa, since marijuana is legal there and a part of the culture.

personally, i do not like smoking bud before training, or any kind of physical activity because i feel very sluggish and feel my cardio drained. hwoever, after training its great for all the soreness and bruises. it relaxed your muscles and helps them heal faster.

I'm not sure where you get your info....but I have been to Brazil many times, and am married to a Brazilian, I also speak Portuguese fluently, and when I travel down there, I am in the non tourist areas...Having grown up in middle class Southern California, I can tell you that pot usage is way more prevalent here in SoCal than in Brazil. As far as legalities go, no, marijuana, is not legal, nor is it part of the Brazilian culture. Marijuana and other drugs are commonly sold in the favelas, or the slums, and while the laws may not be regularly enforced in these areas, it is by no means legal. Getting caught by the cops down in Brazil would be a bigger nightmare than up here in the States, especially for an American. You are facing serious time in jails that make our jails here look like country clubs. Or, as an American, you may have to pay a huge "fine" just to see freedom again

I have been smoking ganja for 20 plus years. I have alway been very athletic my entire life and found that I do perform better while i am high. When I was younger I played baseball at very competive level and always found that I hit a lot better when I was stoned. I was always one of those people who get butterflies in my stomach and almost feel like i was ready to puke before a game. weed was the only thing that would relax me. I am 35 years old now and i still smoke daily. Before I lift weights I will twist up a fattie to help me get through my workout. I do not smoke weed if I plan on doing a lot of cardio, and I dont smoke when I am at bjj class. However if I am at a tournament or at open mats I will get high before I roll. The reason for this is If I am learning new moves it is easier to grasp straight. Also my bjj classes last 1 1/2 hours. If I were to get high before class I would have to sneak back out to the car after 45 minutes to keep my buzz. I know alot of you guys are gonna look down at me for smoking weed, but it is a part of my life. I dont recomend for everyone but if you can get high and not act like a complete idiot I dont think it's hurting anyone. I am morally a good person and I beleive I treat people kindly. If any of you guys wanna bash me for this go ahead, but I beleive you need to look at yourselves first and see what your character flaws are. May 7th I'm in a tournament. Maybe all the stoners will be marching, and not fighting

That would be good, becasue then I wont be the only one that feels all tingly and ready to puke... AHahahahaah!

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing yet. Guess I need to do some introspecting...

Well it might not be any more than in other sports.

I know some of the Brazilians do smoke weed. A friend of mine trained with a couple of really really big named Brazilians (I'm not saying who obviously) and he said they used to toke it up. He said one time, after class on a Saturday, there was a bunch of guys hanging out behind their school sitting around a table with a sh*tload of greenery there. Marijuana is pretty damn common all over so I wouldn't go so far to say it's part of the BJJ culture.

brazilians are known for partying harder than americans, so dont tell me they dont smoke pot, only people living in slums do. thats bs. and of course the corrupt ass cops are gonna try to get tons of money from people, its not the pot they care about. marijuana grows wild in brazil.

marijuana can for sure help people regarding martial arts. when i am stoned im able to grasp concepts alot easier cause i can think about them more in depth, and in different perspectives. marijuana also stimulates the creative part of your brain, so alot of people will roll stoned and come up with really clever new techniques and strategies.

smoking bud also helps alot with weight lifting. u can concentrate alot better, use better form, and lift a little more. some of the best weight lifting workouts ive done were when i was stoned.

whats cool is marijuana smoke wont kill your lungs they way tobacco do. thats why many athletes smoke bud and still perform. the cleaner u smoke it the better. using a bong will filter your smoke with water, reducing toxins. i can smoke everyday if i wanted to and still train hard, but if i smoke 1 cigerette i can feel it the next day.

some people get stoned and just act like they are 2, or just go to sleep and some people get really intellectually in depth and can control themselves. i never smoke and just giggle and do stupid shit, instead i get really deep in thought and just think about stuff. its not for everyone, but certain peopel can for sure greatly benefit from pot. the only thing really bad about pot is that its illegal in some countries.

You know, you are making a helluva lot of asssumptions and distortions about what I am saying here....I wasn't saying that Brazilians don't smoke 'da herb, of course some of them do. And of course this isn't isolated in the favelas, but that's where a lot of people go to score. And the laws are sometimes not enforced like they are outside of the favelas. Just like in America, there are people from all class levels that enjoy smoking ganja. Do Brazilians party harder than Americans, some do....and then again I know some Americans that party harder than anyone I have met on this planet. Your original post claimed that pot is legal in Brazil and that it is part of the culture...what I am saying is that this is false, it is illegal in Brazil.....and as being part of the culture, what I am saying is that I have seen more prevalence, regarding smoking pot here in SoCal, than in Brazil. Now, I'd like to comment on your last quoted statement that "marijuana grows wild in Brazil"....that is funny, because, most of the marijuana in Brazil is imported from other countries in South America, that is a well known fact. I have travelled to Northern India and Nepal, yeah, ganja grows wild there....but Brazil, no, I haven't seen it at all, and I've travelled extensively there. Before you make statements about countries, try buying a plane ticket and checking it out first.

A kid in my class said he had really bad cotton mouth one time while we were sparring. I thought he was just saying his mouth was dry from rolling and breathing hard. I didn't think anything about it being related to drugs until you brought this up haha. Now you've got me wondering.

                            thats not true either

brazil has its own pot, and it grows wild. its just not that potent, thats why they import better shit.

btw, socal sux. we get much better buds here in norcal.

anyway, can we get back to talking about smoking bud and having fat sessions ?

The question is whether smoking pot and BJJ go hand in hand.

                              No they don't.

If your instructor or senior students are smoking pot, it's probably time to find another instructor.
