BJJ often affiliated with smoking pot?

Eddie Bravo and Joe Rogan are said to be heavy smokers.
We've got one guy who rolls stoned sometimes. He says it makes him think more clearly and be better at BJJ, but in reality, it just relaxes him - usually he's so tense and tries to use strength all the time.
And LOL to the people who say that it's proven that pot has no harmful sideaffects. If you want to know what the Harvard studies really found, try http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/evidenc.../Health_1.html
Some highlights:
Smoking marijuana regularly (a joint a day) can damage the cells in the bronchial passages which protect the body against inhaled microorganisms and decrease the ability of the immune cells in the lungs to fight off fungi, bacteria, and tumor cells.Studies further suggest that marijuana is a general "immunosuppressant" whose degenerative influence extends beyond the respiratory system. Regular smoking has been shown to materially affect the overall ability of the smoker’s body to defend itself against infection by weakening various natural immune mechanisms, including macrophages (a.k.a. "killer cells") and the all-important T-cells.The main respiratory consequences of smoking marijuana regularly (one joint a day) are pulmonary infections and respiratory cancer, whose connection to marijuana use has been strongly suggested but not conclusively proven. The effects also include chronic bronchitis, impairment in the function of the smaller air passages, inflammation of the lung, the development of potentially pre-cancerous abnormalities in the bronchial lining and lungs, and, as discussed, a reduction in the capabilities of many defensive mechanisms within the lungs.Marijuana smoke and cigarette smoke contain many of the same toxins, including one which has been identified as a key factor in the promotion of lung cancer. This toxin is found in the tar phase of both, and it should be noted that one joint has four times more tar than a cigarette, which means that the lungs are exposed four-fold to this toxin and others in the tar.It has been suggested that marijuana is at the root of many mental disorders, including acute toxic psychosis, panic attacks (one of the very conditions it is being used experimentally to treat), flashbacks, delusions, depersonalization, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, and uncontrollable aggressiveness. Marijuana has long been known to trigger attacks of mental illness, such as bipolar (manic-depressive) psychosis and schizophrenia. In the short term, marijuana use impairs perception, judgment, thinking, memory, and learning; memory defects may persist six weeks after last use.Mental disorders connected with marijuana use merit their own category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV, published by the American Psychiatric Association.

marijuana isnt really that bad. alcohal and tobacco which are legal are way more dangerous than marijuana ever could be. u cant even od on marijuana but u have people getting alcohal poisoning and dying all the time. btw, smoking joints all the time may be pretty bad for your lungs, but most people use bongs and bubblers now which filter alot of toxins out of the smoke and cool it so its not as harsh. marijuana has gotten a really bad rap cause of tons of propaganda that isnt true. i see adds on tv and magazines for all kinds of alcohal products, and that seems to be ok. alcohal kills people and destroys families. my friends dad died not too long ago from drinking. had he smoked pot instead of drinking all the time he would have alive today.the alcohal killed him pretty fast too. its all propoganda.
cakegirl, most of those risks u mentioned from that study are greatly exaggerated. sure there is a risk, anythings possible but most of those risks are pretty uncommon. i mean, i bet sitting in traffic and breathing all those chemicals and pollutants in the air everyday is worse for you than smoking pot a couple times a week.
btw, its true eddie bravo smokes pot alot and trains. how u think he came up with the "twister" ?

I wasn't going to respond again but I wanted to say that I agree with emptyness. I too found those facts way exaggerated and/or twisted. The hype and propaganda is as it's always been..a tool to control the minds of the masses. The truth is there for those willing to see it. And there will always be those who take self-measurement and celebration in their decision to be straight arrows. If you don't smoke or drink anything ever...yay, good for you. You will fit into the system nicely. And in the end you'll die from one of the "OK" ways...Heart attack from too much saturated fat in your diet, or Colon cancer from rotting meat sludge in your colon.
If you're not quite the perfect straight arrow, you can still drink and fit in nicely. Pete Coors and Anheiser/Busch will make sure you stay feeling good about yourself and still die from one of the "Accepted" ways such as liver failure. You'll also help the community by paying lots of $ in taxes and/or fines so that others can make a living monitoring and policing your drinking habit.
But don't you dare smoke pot. It makes you too damn happy. Happy people are dangerous and tend to question the authority that oppresses them. So whatever you do avoid the dreaded reefer. It will ruin your life.
Please just forget about all this...Just get up and go to work and don't ask questions and be a good American. "America..F*ck Yea!"

Hey man, I'm not judging anyone. What you do is your business. I'm just saying there are probably some real side effects from smoking weed.
I'd like to believe that eating 10 lbs of bacon and butter fits into the Atkins diet plan nicely, but there are probably real side effects from it.
As soon as the long-term side effects are properly established, people will be better informed and no one will be able to sue the government for not telling them that weed was gonna have some adverse side effects.
Before the 1970's people had a hunch that smoking cigarettes was linked to cardiovascular and heart disease. It took a while for studies to get published, but if you want to be a smoker you atleast have some understanding of the side effects.

my friends dad drank for 2 years straight and died from liver and kidney failure. if he had smoked for 2 years str8 he woulda been fine. he woulda watched alotta cartoons, thats about it. ive been smoking marijuana longer than he had been drinking, and ive gotten more in shape and healthier from training and working out while smoking marijuana, while he suffered badly in the hospital in agony while his organs were failing him, and then he died. marijuana doesnt cause cancer either, theres never been any evidence to suggest this. if anything they have found evidence that suggegsts marijuana might be able to ward off brain tumors, and studies in mice have shown that thc prevents their arteries from hardening, something that alcohal and tobacco are responsible for. tobacco and alcohal, unlike marijuana, are well known to cause cancer and be many many times more dangerous than marijuana.it is a sad fact that tobacco and alcohal kill more people yearly than all illegal drugs combined, including heroin and cocain. this is true. tobacco and alcohal are openely marketed to people of all ages and that is ok. people take all kinds of whack ass pills and medications everyday for every fucking ailment u can think of. u got old men popping pills to make their dicks hard, while children who cant sit still are givin all kinds of medications, some of wich are mild forms of speed, and thats ok too. how many fucking commercials for booze do i see everytime i turn on the tv. people die from alcohal poisoning all the time, and do whack ass shit when they are drunk. but if i wanna smoke a bowl on my front porch after working all day so i can relax a bit and watch some seinfeld before i go to sleep that is not acceptable at all. im looked down on and called a drug abuser, an addict, and a bad person. i love how people look down on marijuana so much, then proceed to give their 8 year old kids prescription speed while they down cocktails of zoloft, prozac and all kinds of brain altering chemicals to make themselves feel better and continue to judge others.
my uncle started taking medication for depression when he was young. now, he has to take like 40 different kinds of medications, cause all those pills rewired his brain and left the chemicals in his head completely unbalanced. dont tell me this is better than taking a couple puffs of marijuana and playing some video games.
i love how people who dont know jack shit about marijuana like to make claims as if they have the slightest clue as to what they are talking about.
marijuana isnt harmful, but that doesnt mean u should smoke yourself stupid every chance u get. too much of anything is bad for u, even if its a good thing. moderation is the key.
btw, not all people who smoke pot are lazy and eat junk food. there are plenty of people who smoke pot and work hard, and train hard and have their shit together. look at all the top level bjj'ers who smoke bud. tell them they are lazy and out of shape. generalizing entire groups of people is easy to do, but that dont make it true.

I would not use pot when I'm being serious about something in my life. I wouldnt use it to help write a midterm, or lift harder, or to fight longer. It's recreational, not medicinal. It will slow you down in the long run. Just the fact that smoke has high concentrations of CO2 will slow you down, make your muslces work harder for oxygen, make you weaker.
Do BJJ and smoking pot go hand in hand? I dont think so. Human civilation and marijuana go hand in hand. Almost anyone you meet or see has at least tried pot once. Same with drinking alcohol or using tobacco. I personally can't really stereotype people by the drugs they use. Anyone can be a really good fighter, and though they may take drugs, the drugs are definitely not improving their game. The "Greats" that you talk about would be great no matter what and smoking pot is just part of who they are.Last edited by HtTKar; 05-08-2005, 08:40 PM.

I am not a BBJJ player (Judo) but I cannot imaging why anyone would want to smoke and roll IMHO. I can say the many entertainers particularly comedians spark up and the say that it helps the creativity, although the stage performance suffers if they go on stage high. Honestly, I get the writing blocks and thought about using some bud to get through it, never did, but thought about it.
Just my 2 cents

Cmon guys! Lets "Kick drugs out of our schools!"
Seriously drugs of any kind like that are stupid. That is my opinion and I dont believe they help you train, I think a person without drugs is going to perform better and be a better athlete and dont need a crutch to do well.

Here's a great example of what pot can do to you. The paranoid, conspiracy-theory nutjob.

marijuana isnt harmful.
Here we see more of the paranoid conspiracy lunacy. I like the 'militant' defense mode shown here. Combined with the 'expert knowledge' angle, its a keeper! Kinda like a fat shit telling a doctor he knows more about what fat does to your body 'cause he's been scarfin' burgers for twenty years.

LOL yeah like pot is a (an?) hallucinogen because it affects your PERCEPTION of reality. You only THINK pot is not bad ( = GOOD ) because your brain won't accept anything that might contradict your FLAWED ( drug induced ) perception that it is infact pleasurable to you. (GOOD) That's the standard addict reasoning and justification syndrome...
Can't really have a drug "problem" if the stuff ain't BAD in your eyes, eh? Forget the factual legalities and scientific research.
Good thing the water in your bong filters out all the bad stuff... wouldn't want that crap in your lungs. Or your brain...
Don't think about your future employment prospects or passing drug/ background screening or owning any firearms...
Your car ever smell like weed? Have fun with that if you ever get stopped for some minor traffic thing.
It's a "controlled substance" dude.
