i'm new to this site and lately i've been wanting to join brazilian jiu jitsu, so i looked in the phone book and found a class. my mom called and got some information. they told her that i can get a free trial membership for one day to see if i like it and if i do like it i pay 80 bucks a month for six session a week. the problem is i don't know too much about bjj. can someone fill me in and am i getting a good deal on the classes.

    Welcome.

80/mo isn't cheap, but it's not unreasonable either if the instruction is good. Go to the freebie and check it out.

This can take along time to answer, but I will keep it as simple as I can.
BJJ will teach you how to fight on the ground. How to stay relaxed, escape and apply locks from the top, bottom, side, and back position. There is also competitions to test your abilities (with and without your kimono). It will work you out and you will have fun. Bottom line, check out different schools (do not feel pressured to sign up right away) when you find a school you like, talk it over with your mom and then give all you can. Good luck with your future. Train with heart and technique! Rock The World!

If you don't know what bjj can teach then you shouldn't be spending your mom's money on classes. Why do you want to do bjj? And what city are you in?

Yes you are correct BJJ is used in the UFC; I think that's how most (if not all) that practice BJJ learned about it. The UFC today does have a more rounded fighter. If this is what you want, you probably want a combination of Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, and YES BJJ. You need to start somewhere, that part is up to you. Another thing to remember is there ARE schools who train Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters. Maybe that is what you are looking for? Whatever you decide, FINISH your training! Again, good luck! Maybe we will see you in a future UFC!!!!!!

well so am I. and that 80 bucks a month is why we stil have parents. use your power, abuse the system, think with your walet, and have fun doing it. But stil try it out, it's the only way to know wheter or not you like something.
