it's been said in many way but here it is again:
to learn how to defend against strikes, learn how to strike
to learn how to defend against grappling, learn how to grapple
there is no "best" way or "best" art just what is the most appropriate action at that given moment in time. that action depends largely on opportunity and your urgency for action.
best training!

-the idea is to keep your distance and shoot in for a takedown, or tie the guy up with double underhooks and trip him, or throw him, etc. (stay to close or too far away) As a BJJ fighter you may have to take a punch or two, but once you get the guy down, its a whole new fight and if the opponent has no ground game its going to be short fight

I agree with Omaplata. I think that you would try to defend and counter the best you can until you take them down. Even without any MA background most people know how to keep their arms up and throw a punch. Once on the ground if you dont have any experience its all over. My instructor can submit me in less than 30 seconds once it goes to the ground.

too bad the stand up striking arts don't deal with someone attacking you with fists and knees while on the ground.

have to agree with omaplata here... summed up the game very well. it's a distance game. keeping out of the opponent's strike zone until u have the opportunity to close the gap. the success of it will depend on a person's ability to read the distance and to read the cadence of his/her attacker (technique as well, of course)
tameo.. perhaps you should watch some more MMA matches. almost all of them involve the scenario we are talking about here. and as vincechoo pointed out, to improve your effectiveness to defend against something, learn how to use that thing... thus the cross-arts training prevalent in post-mod MA.
perhaps you could clarify exactly where you are heading with your question. what's the bottom line?

My lie down thing was serious.
Its true if I knew only BJJ, I would just lie down If someone was trying to strike with me. You could lie down, then they can either go to the gorund with you to hit you, stop fighting you, or try to kick you and eventaully you acn tie up their legs and bring them to the ground.
If you want to take it to the ground you bring it to a clinch, then throw them on the ground. Or try to use knees.
Also a BJJ guy might just throw some fast elbows and punches back.
Honestly I would take a punch to get a double leg takedown if we were in a MMA matchup. Sets me up for exactly wehre I want to be.
