That depends. What do you want to learn. Self defense? Competition? If so, what kind...Mix Martial arts, point tournament, olympics, ect.. ect.. Traditional Martial Arts (as far as recieving your belt)? Your age has to be considered? Basically, what is your goal? What do you want to accomplish?
If it's receiving a black belt, go to a traditional school like Tae kwon Do Karate or Jiujitsu.
If it's competion, the same answer along with boxing or kickboxing school is good; and even wrestling. You may want to compete in MMA, then, go to a vale tudo school.
If it's self defense - well you should go to a school that teaches F.I.G.H.T., Krav Maga, or something that specifies on Self Defence. (We teach FIGHT curriculum in our school www.fight2survive.com)
I hope this helps and good luck with your choice. Do something and do not care what anyone else thinks or says!

Warrior189 is correct. MMA is the abbreviation for Mix Martial Arts. Basically UFC fights. Boxing IS a great sport, but the only draw back is when a boxer is taken to the floor he is usually in trouble. To be able to defend your self on your feet and on the ground, you WILL need a MMA school. At least boxing and wrestling. I unserstand that you are not into the kicking stuff, but remember, a kick stronger and has a longer reach than a punch. Then you have knees to follow kicks and punches. I really hope you won't need this stuff to defend yourself at a public school. If you truly need it, it is sad that our public school system has gone down in some parts of our country. Check out differnt schools. Preferably MMA! Go get them kid! I'll check you guys later tonight (around 10:00) I have to go teach class!

hey kid
I admire your initive, If I could go back in a time machine: I'd start boxing training at 5 and wrestling training as soon as they'd let me, at 15 I'd start fighting in either boxing or kickboxing/mauy thai and I'd start bjj training at 14,when I was 18 I'd fight in mma.
Stay away from tma's because it's bullshit and a waste of money to learn how to fight from people who can't fight(speaking from experience)Also be skeptical of place that are"seldefense schools" because some are crooks as well. If you can only go to one school because of money/time ect, then go to an mma school, cause you'll work on both striking and grappling. If there's no mma school in your area then go to a grappling school:
(bjj, judo ,sambo,submission wrestling ect.)
And go to a boxing or kickboxing or mauy thai school for good sparring and good stand up skills. Even if you don't want to be a full contact fighter if you take my advice your self-defense abilities willl rock. P.S. don't tell people about your ma training. It's no ones bussiness but yours.

My recomendation for the Detroit area would be The Institue of Martial Arts also known as Coopers Muay Thai. Mr. Cooper has been training both amatuer and pro boxers and muay thai (as well as American kickboxers) for a long time. This includes 2004 U.S. and North American WKA muay thai champ (I think Steve fights at 155) as well as Kick International U.S. champ.
Even if you don't want to compete the instruction is awesome. The curriculum includes more than just boxing and muay thai. You can find coopers online or call 313-581-5085.
To anyone who feels that I'm trying to brag too much or whatever, piss off. It's a great school and I'm quite happy to be there.
Peace

And besides:-
traditional - of based or obtained by tradition
tradition - the process of handing down
all martial arts are traditional, unless you are in the process of creating your own.

pleazzze
you know exactly what I'm saying, but since you need examples here's a partial list of tma's that are not combat effective and are bullshit:
karate,tkd,akido,tai chi,most styles of kung fu,hapkido,kuksool won,hwrangdo,shotokan karte,goju ru karate,shorin ryu karate,kenpo,kempo,
I could go on all dam day but I won't
the only alive and fuunctional tma's(i.e. arts where you wear uniforms, bow ect.) are bjj, judo, sambo and the like

the coopers website is being worked on. Cooperskickboxing.com
Also try searchs for it or Institute Of Martial Arts. There is more on the web about us than just the web site.
It is located on Warren about four blocks from Southfield (M39?). Just of the road from Fairlane.
Give a call and set up an appointment to come in and speak with Mr. Cooper. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
