  • no gi grappling

me and my boys grapple allot, we learned some BJJ stuff on the web and we did some wrestling, so we do submission grappling. I got this good book out of the library about judo. I want to learn allot about take-downs, i want to be very good at a bunch of them because i think they are a great part of grappling. However in this book all the guys have gis on and we dont fight with them, so most of thier takedowns involve gripping the tough gi to bring the man down, which doesnt help me too much.

are there any websites that show non-gi takedowns?

any advise for takedowns in general?

    thanks allot

you can find some videos online with no gi.. I just know mainly with no gi as opposed to gi where you would grab the collar with your right hand you usually grab the back of the neck with the right hand.. also try to control the elbow instead of the sleeve. Its completely different though. I have only done 1 no gi class and its WAYYYY different. I never got tapped that night at least.. ha. Just type in no gi or something on google.

If you want to learn some good non gi takedowns, why not look into some wrestling, never seen a wrestler wear a gi lol.

As for general advice for the takedowns, my favorite is the double leg, shoot in, pull out their legs, and go from there.

The best takedown I know/ could hope to get would be a double leg , but lift them up slam them to their back (or head if it isnt mma) and take side control.

Single leg takedowns work as well, shoot in , grab the leg and drive forward until they fall over.

Im not too sure about the actual technique for arm takedowns, but there are a few easy to do that you can just learn from wrestling on your feet.

Or you can slap on a standing choke from behind and just fall over lol.

As for the Judo techniques with no Gi, I dont know how many of those there are.

-grab below or right at the knee, above there makes it much harder

The essence of all gi takedowns will translate to no-gi. It's all about destroying the other person's base or catching the other person out of base.

you can control the opponent hips with or without a gi.

you can grab a wrist instead of the sleeve. grab a bicep istead of a sleeve.

you can grab the neck instead of the collar.

you can take an underhook or reach around the neck instead of taking a collar.

you can pick ankles regardless if theres a gi or not.

and of course there are the ever popular double and single leg takedowns.

The list goes on and on...

This is not the way to do a single leg takedown. If you grab at the knee or lower your opponent can turn into you and easily get your back. when you shoot for a single leg your inside hand needs to reach up between your opponents legs in what is called a high crotch. reach up as high as you can and hold his lower back with your inside hand. then drive your opponent back and lift him up at the same time. This is not a homo move just the proper way to do a single leg.

Sorry, but high crotch not= single leg. High crotch is more of a hip lock, while the single leg just takes the opponents ability to retain his balance.

Both are good and effective takedowns. I normally lean backwards after taking the high crotch to tip the opponent backwards and land in side control (or just remain standing if I wanted to dump someone on his head in the street).

Single legs often land in the opponents guard. Sometimes you can charge off sideways while holding one leg up by the knee, (blocking the other leg with your hand) and miss the guard.

Hello Everyone. For what it's worth.....
A single leg take down is NOT the same as a high crotch. Very different executuions.
If you grab at the hips (base - trunk) and even the knees, your oponnent will sprawl on you easy. When you shoot doubles never wrap on the hips or knees, but if you have to go, for knees. Better yet, try this: For a doble leg take down...After the shot,
                1. Wrap your hand around his calves. He won't be able to sprawl as easy. He may not even be able to spawl!
                2. Pivot your base knee (one between his legs) to the side you want to take him. Focus on your hips pointing to the side. Not only straight.
                3. Lift him (stand up) with your trail leg, that should be to his side, as you push with your head (it should be around his back/shoulder).
                DRIVE ACROSS HIS BODY!
                4. Hold on tight to his legs and drive your shoulder into his belly or chest. Focus on hugging his legs to your belly.
                5. You should be in a side mount. Why be in the guard if you can avoid it. Try it danfagella, I think you will like it! Good luck!

if your gonna do leg take downs do it quick or keep driving forward because depending on where your head is you'll get armbared or choked.

You are EXTREMELY correct!!! If you only drive straight through, you end up in a guard most of the time. My point is not to end up in a guard.

I'd recommend finding a wrestling school and joining it.

I did wrestling for 2 high schools last year, i went to thier practices and actually did do one varsity match. I stopped though cuz i hate the win by pin rule and the lame suits, even though i won in 33 seconds. I like wrestling because much of it is practical and useful in real grappling but i wanted to learn some other things. Judo has some cool takedowns that ARENT singles, doubles, crothes, fireman's carys, ect...

they have trips and hip throws and arm throws that i like allot more, and want to get used to doing effectively, i want to be a takedown artist. I plan to get these moves down a do some takedown drills with my boys who love to grapple, just like, one on one, when a takedown is achieved, stand up and go at it again.

i just need to find some non-high school wrestling no-gi takedowns. I'll try my best to use this gi judo book i have now, it is very good stuff. It's called "Best Judo"

I know alot of wrestlers who are now taking BJJ. I was wondering how smooth the transition from BJJ to say college wrestling is?
