Dutchman,I am 43.I have been doing this stuff since I was 18.We knew about the Gracies jiu jitsu way back in the early seventies.I never trained full time in it untill two years ago,but already knew the basics.I have always cross trained.I have a brother that went to Judo, one went to Boxing, and I went to Tae Kwon Do.We taught each other what we learned and then went out to learn more.

Twisted up,
You have made some very good posts here. You're somewhat new to the forum so I figured I'd say welcome.
We need as many knowledable posters as we can get.
Dan,
Wow I thought you were in your 20's!
That's not an insult at all, just surprised me a bit.
When I was around 13 years old I saw the Gracie video in one of my catalogs but skimmed right over it and went for the ninja and JKD videos...sigh...if I had only known back then

Edro, exellent post. Most of your standard takedowns turn to shit.I couldnt have said it better.Thats why I feel that it is the most overlooked aspect of BJJ.The BJJ stance is not for clinching and then working for a takedown. It is designed for keeping distance and enticing head shots with low guards. But,if you can't box,why invite headshots? So you can dive in for the takedown. That ,I think is more dangerous than the clinch by far.So if you are starting standing against a good boxer I think it makes sence to clinch first .That is where the roman-greco is your best friend.Combine this with Judo and you now have the means to get those hard takedowns.

Thanks Ryu
Hey Ryu, thanks for the kind words.
I can appreciate the need for cool heads and decent posts. I've not always been this way, but I've learned to bite my tongue and remain "diplomatic".
I am new to this forum, but I like it a great deal. MUCH better (IMO) than the Underground, though they do have their moments.
Thanks again.

Good post
dan downard
Pretty good post there! I couldn't agree more about the takedown bit. The whole idea of diving for a takedown doesn't sit real well with me either. I also hate getting sprawled upon! You can often get your opponent's defense out of the way for takedowns from the clinch while that isn't true from long range.
Ever since Don Frye entered the octogon, I realized the strength of Greco-Roman wrestling and judo training. I think he had both.
He was (and is) the man. Randy Couture came in a really did well with the same basic format although I think Don is the better boxer.
It just all goes to show you what a good cross-training program will do for you!

Training
I wish all you guys lived around here!
Obviously, many of you are now familiar with the concept of "alive" training.
I have to say that I feel like the odd man out at the place where I train. The guys are LONG-TIME karate guys and downplay the way I go about things. They ESPECIALLY ridicule BJJ!! It sickens me.
I understand what's really at stake here BUT, I can't help but feel like I'm the only alien on this rock sometimes!
I'm in North Carolina btw, so if you guys know of anyone in this area wanting to train, tell 'em about me here in Winston-Salem.
Thanks
John
