  • Mark Kerr is way way way overrated!

What the hell has Kerr done to be ranked in everyone's top 5 heavyweights? Almost everyone had him as #1 last fall before Igor beat his ass the first time and people continue to insist that he is one of the top heavies. I would say that Igor, Coleman, Couture, Randleman, Barretto, Rizzo, Josh Barnett, Fujita, Pete Williams, and Ricco are among those that deserve to be rated higher than him. Kerr has only beaten "b" fighters and his most impressive victory was a boring g&p decision over Enson. I admit that his domination at AD has been impressive, but this has nothing to do with MMA competition. I think people just rank him high because he is ripped and huge.

I agree. All he ever done was beat some losers like Ranger Stott in the UFC. Then Hugo Duarte goes the distance with him. He win the Abu Dahbi by playing the rules and using his strength over technique. After seeing the fat Russian Farmhand Igor easily out wrestle Kerr I knew Kerr was nothing but an overrated punk that does even desreve to be listed in the top 20 fighters.

I was thinking the same thing recently...
I think Kerr tried too hard to be rounded fighter....he trained alot of standup and drifted from his very strong wrestling game...his standup is still weak....

So what was the lowdown on the Vovchanchin fight?

I've been looking for a summary but can find none. How bad did he beat his ass?

          I haven't seen it yet.
But, if Kerr belongs in the elite heavies merely for being able to hang with Igor then surely Royce Gracie should be a top 5 middleweight for just being able to hang with Saku without being subbed. Kerr has a lot to prove, all he's proved so far is that he is ripped and is good at stalling to victory in submission grappling.

I still think hes a top heavyweight..he's just going through a phase right now.....dont think he knows how to link his standup game with his ground game...always thinks he has to do one or the other...not flowing yet...he'll be back..

Tony10--The reports are that the 20 minute regulation period was close, with Kerr possibly having a small advantage. In the OT though, Igor came out with a strong second wind and dominated.

Although I don't think Kerr has fallen out of the top 10 (or even 5 really), I agree with Mayagi-san that "hanging" with Igor isn't enough to earn a top spot. If it were, Carlao Barreto and Leo Castello Branco would be top 5 heavyweights as well. Kerr badly needs a good win soon.

Vortex, let me bring you up to light a bit. After dropping a couple of posts here and reading some of the comments on this forum, I've come to realize that most guys who post in here have the mentality of those kids who live and die for the WWF. All emotion and all talk. Who ever has the belt thats the man. "Forget what I felt, said, or did yesterday, today I want to lick the sweat off the balls of so and so."

Guys here jump on the bandwangon like there's tomorrow dude.

                    Mark Kerr being over-rated

                    Mr Miyagi,

I have only ONE thing to say regarding this (and I mean no disrespect): Why don't YOU fight him and see if he's OVER-RATED?!

                      About Kerr

I think that most of us on this forum who once felt Kerr was "invincible" were basing this on the fact that he has the potential to be devastating when you look at his background. He's a wrestler who was an alternate for the olympic team, he won his division at ADCC on 2 occasions, and he's been working on his standup enough to beat guys who label themselves "strikers" at their own game.
On paper, Kerr is by far the most complete heavyweight on the planet, and was potentially the equivalent of Uno/Sakurai/Sakuraba at his weight.
If you watch footage of his first fights in Brazil and his UFC appearances - he looks nearly unstoppable. He had ferocity in his eyes and he was brutal to his opponents.
Everything seemed to change after his fight with Duarte. From that point on, he no longer seemed to steamroll opponents. When Duarte didn't quit immediately, Kerr seemed confused. That was NOT the same mentality that Kerr had against Varelans, Hulk, Otavio, etc.
People at that time were dissing the "Ground 'n pound" style of fighting, but certain guys like Kerr are powerful enought to make it a valid finishing meanuever. Kerr should have never gone away from it. He should've simply learned about a half dozen guard passes and enough stand-up to light up people not on their guard and gone from there.
On a good day, I still think Kerr could potentially beat anyone.
Some people have mentioned that Kerr had substance abuse problems right around the time of the Duarte fight. I'm not jumping to conclusions or pointing fingers, but that isn't out of the question. I'm sure the Igor KO didn't help matters. Maybe that scared him a little, and there's nothing wrong with that.
All I'm saying is that Kerr still has a complete package of techniques and when used in the right combination can be deadly. Remember that as Dan Severn supposedly got more well rounded, he got worse and worse. Why? You start learning things that "might" stop your attacks and you start getting timid, and trying different things you aren't so good at anymore. There comes a time and place to stick with what got you there, and simply refine it a little.
IF Kerr goes back to his WVC style and brings back the brutality that made him known as the "smashing machine" (which is sooo much cooler than the "specimen"), I think he'd still be successful today.

Twisted up, your sense of logic must be twisted. If I fight Kerr, win or lose, how will that help to demonstrate whether or not he is overrated? I'm just making a point that he has not beaten a top 10 fighter and I've always held this opinion, even before his first beating to Igor. By the way, I'm not a heavyweight, I'm not an elite fighter, and Kerr would not in any way establish his supremacy as a top fighter by defeating me. I'm glad I'm not stupid like you.

Man, i'm glad people don't follow other sports like they do NHB. The first time Mark McGwire went 0-3 in a game, they'd send him to the minor leagues!

I think Kerr has all the tools. Maybe he's just a little bit "off" right now. I remember after 2 knockouts, people though Coleman was done.

Why is it that we are willing to give props to someone who never fights, and lives off of reputation (several examples of this).. and bash the people who actually fight top notch opponents and lose once in awhile.

(Then we whine when noone wants to take a "serious" opponent.. would you? Knowing that if you lost (god forbid) you would be considered a has been?)
