  • If Judo defeated BJJ 50 years ago why is it popular?

I saw the Gracies In Action and they shows the fight of Kimura against Helio Gracie. This Kimura was a Judo fighter and he totally, completely crushed Helio like an ant.
Isnt this some proof that Judo was more effective then the BJJ?
I also hear about a former student of Helio, Carlos Santana
beating up Helio and breaking his arm. This Santana say he win because he practiced other styles apart from BJJ. He take these styles and he created Lutre Livre.
so if Judo and Lutre Livre defeated BJJ all these years ago why do people still wrongly believe that the BJJ is superior?

Masahiko was a powerful man with a lot of spirit, heart, and above all true newaza skill. He was an exceptional judo player, and an idol of mine.
I think the reason BJJ is so popular is because it can take on and out a lot of judoka on the scene today. Simply because judo focuses too much on nagewaza and less on the ground, but (as Judo Guy said) it's because the rules of the contests are so different. Doesn't matter if you're a BJJ blackbelt, if you get ipponed, you're done. So that's the way they train.
Most of BJJ's popularity has been from UFC. That's the one single factor in my opinion. Judo didn't do that well in the competition over the likes of Shamrock, and Mezger until Tsuyoshi Kohsaka came into the scene, but even he was cross trained. But it definately proves judoka can fight, and well.

I think the more work that BJJ and judo do with each other, the more the two arts will develop into better systems.

The main think to be mindful of with regard to the martial arts, is that many of them including BJJ and Judo stemmed from Japanese Jiu Jitsu. BJJ and Judo groundfighting therefore share many similarities. The reason that many BJJ guys are generally stronger on the ground than Judoka is that groundfighting is not emphasised in Judo as much as it is in BJJ. The reason that many of the BJJ trained competitors do better than Judo competitors in open style competitions is that a higher percentage of BJJ schools train at a high intensity than the Judo schools. Simple as that.

Also remember that Kimura and Santana were bigger than Helio. For Helio to put up such good fights, even though he lost, said a lot for BJJ.

I don't know this for a fact but it may be that even though Helio lost it seems that there were probably other fights among Judo fighters and BJJ fighters, with the outcome probably going to the BJJ fighter. And since Judo enmphasis is to throw the opponent, well once the Judo fighter throws the BJJ fighter,it's on the ground and thats a BJJ guys heavon.
