  • anything besides chokes.

    my friends who i grapple with are about 35lbs heavier than myself, and they work out allot. I'm in fine shape, but im not bulky, i dislike bulk. So anyways, I find it harder and harder to do anything but chokes to them, because i cant control thier arms or legs, they are so strong. So, almost all of my victories come from rear naked chokes, or front chokes.

    This is getting boring and predictable, besides doing more strenth excersize myself, how can i get over this problem of only being able to use chokes?

    Most successful fighters are happy relying on pet moves. If it ain't broke why fix it? What about adding a few wrist locks? They work on strong dudes if you know what you are doing.

      My grappling instructor is bigger than me, but weaker.. and he has no problems getting my arms and Ive fought some girls who I'm way way stronger than.. and sometimes I cant get their arms, theres one whos amazing at BJJ, and Ive never got anything on her.

      A tip I picked up, from the instructor, is whenever I went for Kimura, ShoulderLock, Armbar, id always try to use strength to pin the arm down and that... he just pushes his body weight up on me more, and uses that to help get the arm where he wants it.

      (from him on top in sidemount).

      Dont know if that helps, but as said before, if its working...

          Hate to break it to you, but the answer is probably the boring, usual one: you're not that great a grappler yet, and need to do a lot more drilling and rolling.

          When you say "front choke from top guard," what specifically do you mean? That you're finishing chokes on your friends from inside their guards? Because if that's the case, then obviously neither you or your friends are actually training at any kind of submission grappling school, and the answer to all your problems is: go to class.

            well we aren't, but no most of my front chokes are from the mount possition

            all i know is what i can read in books or see on bjj.org ect...

            i am going to go to a BJJ class for free in providence, and probably join one that is opening in cranston. there is also a JJ club at my university (which i will be a freshman in this fall).

            i'm definutely not a great grappler, i know this, but i will try to be great, i'm totally starting to deticate to this and i think it will be a huge part of my life.

              I hope I didn't offend you; I'm nothing special myself, we're all trying to get better. It's just that there are so many questions people ask about grappling, where the only sensible answer is keep training, get a teacher, get better, and you'll be able to do it.

              I know that Mat Santos has a school in providence, though I can't seem to find a website for it; if you can find him in your local yellow pages, I've heard he runs a good school. Out of curiousity, what university will you be going to? That's how I got into bjj two years and ago, and where I still train, at a good university club.

                and also, i think santos is opening one in cranston, Tim Burrill has the one in providence, from what i know, ive emailed him recently about the free class, i cant wait to grapple so hard over there.

                  There is a guy in our class and all he does is try and choke you. It's so freaking lame. he's not learning anything. I always let him get his choke on me just to see if he will ever give up but he never does. He sat in my guard tonight for 5 minutes trying to choke me. I just used it as a downtime rest period. The funny thing is when I sweep him he still continues to try and choke from the bottom. oh well hopefully he moves up with his game.

                    -with the Gi I assume? You can choke a guy from inside his guard if he has no idea how to defend it. Chokes are usually pretty easy when you use the Gi, I look for other moves, it doesnt do anything for me to choke someone with the Gi, it doesnt help with real fight skills much either. I do like the Ezekial though

                      well we never do Gi chokes, and ive tried to cut back on chokes in general its just so hard to control limbs that are really strong
