    Hi Guys,

I have been thinking about joining a bjj club (they do MMA also) in my town but I am not too sure if I am too old (37). I am in decent shape and train with weights and play squash regularly. I really want to give this a try, any advice?

    Thanks

Go do it, there's no problem. Make sure you warm up at the beginning of class, and tap early and often. Have fun.

ive been involved in alot of different martial arts during my life, but i did not start bjj until i was 35. I always wanted to train in bjj, but did not have any schools around me that i felt had qualified instuctors. most of the schools that were offering bjj had instuctors that learned bjj at camps and seminars. last year a school opened up about a half hour away with two blackbelt instructors from rio. I joined and have been going regularly ever since. I enjoy it very much and a couple of weeks ago i received my bluebelt which i am more proud of than my blackbelt in shotokan karate, because of the pain and suffering i endured to get it. when i got my blackbelt in shotokan i was in my early twenties and during the seven years of training i had no injuries. During the last 10 months of training i had quite a few injuries. a cracked rib, turf toe, some ligament damage in my thumb, unknown back pain for a couple weeks, and my ears are starting to look a little f'd up. most of the guys at my school are in their 20's and they are not getting the injuries that i am. if you do bjj and you are over thirty you will get hurt, but what you gotta do is try not to get hurt too badly so you can continue to train. I suggest if it is something you want to do go for it, but realize that you will be hurting in places that never hurt before.

          Go for it!

There were a couple of 50 year-olds where I was training BJJ in Japan and they did fine, so 37 is definitely not too old.

Ten years from now you can look back and think about how you might be a blackbelt yourself by now or you can look back on it and think yeah, I gave it a try or maybe you'll be kicking your own butt for sitting on it NOW.

The worse thing that can happen is you won't like it. But you might love it and think of all the fun and learning you miss with each passing day???

If I didn't have other duties and so much work I'd be rolling every night. It's the next best thing to Judo.

Welcome! let us know what you decide.... and thanks for making me feel OLD! I'm only a few years older than you but hey, who's counting?

yep, you can be a black belt in 8- 12 years, so why wait any longer?

definitely join if you think it might be something you like. I'm 34 and gimpy and I don't really have any problems. It's a soft martial art, and it is up to you how hard you want to roll.

I wouldn't say it's a soft martial art but I would say go for it you're still a very young man.

its a long way from a "soft martial art", its probably one of the hardest on the body. I imagine muay thai is tough too

                        Thanks

Thanks for the encouragement guys, I am going to my first class tomorrow night, can't wait. I was procrastinating, telling myself I just need to get myself into a little better shape, then I would go.... after your replies, to hell with it, I'm going!

                        Thanks again,

                        Dave

They might misspell the Ju (and the jutsu) but don't let THAT fool you! Ju is still a gentle art....

                            It is a "soft" style.
