"Vitor has always been the victim of what I call "Sucker's Revenge". Everybody expects Vitor to take someone out in seconds because he's done it so many times, then when he doesn't, "the suckers" that said he would, take it out on him."
Actually, I think you may be on to something there. I have long suspected that GJJ supporters have called Vitor Belfort a "curr" because he has so far failed to become the next great thing they were all proclaiming he would. He was to be the GJJ practicioner with great stand-up fighting skills and incredible physical talent. When he lost against Couture, people could not use the excuse that he was merely physically overwhelmed by the big, bad steroided wrestler that beat him merely because he was so much bigger, faster, and stronger than him. For one thing, Couture does not come across as a steroid user. In addition, Belfort is just as big, strong, and fast as Couture. The first excuse used was that Vitor had bulked up and used steroids, which cost him his stamina. There is probably a great deal of truth in the claim that his bulking up so much, so fast, as opposed to growing into the weight over due time, probably reduced his stamina to such an extent that it may have cost him the fight. People were quick to point out that if only he would cut a little weight and do more cardio, that would not happen again. When he dropped to Middleweight, people predicted that he would then dominate because he would not gas out like he did against Couture. After he lost to Sakuraba, he was quickly dismissed as a "curr" because there was no other way to explain why the fighter that everyone was predicting would dominate the fight scene had been beaten. You see, if his reason for losing stemmed from a lack of tenacity, GJJ supporters, as well as all of anyone else who had so confidently expressed predictions regarding his future, felt better. Of course, there are still people like Pit Dog who, if Sakuraba had broken Vitor's arm, gouged his eyes out, smashed his jaw, and kicked in both kneecaps, would probably have condemmed him as a "curr" if he had used his one good arm to tap out while Sakuraba was mounted on him raining down punches.
