      The truth is ...

Tank would quit against any sonofabitch that could hurt him or get him tired.

        Newbie,
You are right that there has been a lot of talk of Vitor
"curring" out etc., however since those two fights are the only fights he's lost that is probably the basis of it. Any fighter that is out of shape, getting beat, injured etc. is not gonna be the ball of fire he is if he's winning going away. Look at Frank Sham against Horn. Obviously having a bad night and obviously losing. He didn't do anything extraordinary to win. I mean Horn went for a takedown and his leg ended up between Frank's leg who just fell back and won. If he'd lost, would he have been a quitter? Well, according to the theorys' and the way he was fighting he'd have qualified if the fight had kept going as it had been. All the theorizing etc. is just that, theorizing. If a guy finishes a fight or is knocked out, I just don't see him being a quitter. Vitor has always been the victim of what I call "Sucker's Revenge". Everybody expects Vitor to take someone out in seconds because he's done it so many times, then when he doesn't, "the suckers" that said he would, take it out on him. As to Tank, you can call him what you want, he gave all he had against Oleg, got beat on by Severn and still was chasing him at the end, hit the floor three times against Rizzo and still tried to make a fight of it. As to Tank-Frye not being a fix because he just fell out of nowhere, that is exactly what a person of Tank's temperament WOULD do if a fight was fixed. Watch the old boxing film of Jake LaMotta-Jimmy Foxx. Same deal.

          Joe:

Are you calling Tank a quitter?

          What makes you say that?

          Please explain your logic.

            What makes me say that?

Oh, I guess the way he gave Oleg his back once he got dominated.

Or just the way he covered up and let Vitor rain punches on him.

Or maybe it was the way he turned his back and "No Mas"d against Smith.

Stuff like that kinda led me to this belief.

How about you, Ronin? Do you have any ideas as to why Tank would be considered game? What fight did Tank come from behind on, and pull out a win on sheer guts where he was outmatched? Or is the truth simply that he is a dangerous bully ... but one who will quit if put under the microscope of pain?

              Joe:

Either you are a subconscious manifestation of Pit Dog's hostility (brrrrrrr!!!!!), or his brother, possibly both.

              As for Tank's "gameness":

He fought to exhaustion against Oleg and Mo (short notice), took a beating from Severn, never tapped to Vitor and Ferrozzo, nearly killed Frye, and got KO'd by Rizzo, a master striker.

Most people don't view gassing out and being caught in a rear naked choke as being a dishonorable way to quit, my canine friend.

Anyway, I was just baiting you. I don't like Tank.
              But I wouldn't call him a quitter, just a lard-ass.

well Tank was never held in as high of regard as both Vitor and Shamrock......Tank was always just a big guy who had a punchers chance against anyone.....he was never really a TOP NHB fighter.....so him not getting as much flack as Vitor and Shamrock is understandable IMO.....

I'M NOT SAYING ITS OK FOR ANYONE TO RAG A TOP FIGHTER.......BUT WHEN SOMEONE LIKE TRAVIS FULTON LOOSES A FIGHT THERE ISNT NEARLY AS MUCH TALK ABOUT IT AS IF SAKURABA WOULD HAVE LOST......SEE MY POINT

Are you sure about Tank not tapping Ronin? I saw that fight recently, and Im 99% sure he tapped.

                    Just an observation:

David Abott is a bully. His name will be forgotten about a day after he dies. The term great will not be mentioned in the same sentence as David Abott, unless he changes his ways. I don't mean to say he couldn't change. Anyone can change.

True greatness lives on after death. example: Rolls Gracie. He died tragically in 1982 at age 32. He was a true champion in and out of the ring. His name always comes up in interviews and in conversations about the greatest of the Gracie fighters. He was more admired for his qualities off the mat than on.

                      YeLLa TiGeR:

I think it was a ref stop. I'd have to watch again to be absolutely sure. Tank probably would have tapped in another second, but then again he held out against Severn for 20 minutes.

I'm just pulling someone's chain here, anyway.

                      Later, bud.

I don't think any of these guys will be remembered for all time, except maybe Royce and Sak.

The legend, and the legend-killer. Nice.

I finally saw that fight this post is talking about. First of all you have to give credit to anyone who is willing to enter the ring. Secondly, that was a great right kick to the leg followed by a nice right to the jaw that took Tank Abbott out.

[ - Oh, I guess the way he gave Oleg his back once he got dominated - ]
Many fighters with no experience and in the early UFCs gave their back as soon as one punch from the mount was thrown. I wouldn't consider that quitting, just being scared of being manhandeled by a freakin' guy name Oleg!

[ - Or just the way he covered up and let Vitor rain punches on him - ]
I have never foughten anyone with half of Vitor's punching skills when he's asleep but I can tell you that if a guy is running at me throwing his arms at and I know ALL those punches are going to land if I stay there, I'm covering the **** up! Tank doesn't have any great boxing knowledge so I don't expect him to know what to do in that situation.

[ - Or maybe it was the way he turned his back and "No Mas"d against Smith - ]
At least he took more than two leg kicks unlike Severn. Mo Smith made me cringe in pain with those kicks and he wasn't even kicking me or any fighter I liked. Those are POWERFUL kicks straight to an untrained fighters legs, of course he's going to quit.

Sure Tank isn't the greatest or even a good fighter, but he's a UFC and MMA legend and he'll ALWAYS be remembered wether or not people like it. He was VERY popular and has the aura and the charisma to be popular for a very long time

                              Pass me that hookah, Caterpillar

Cause you're stoned out of your gord

Yes, rolling over and giving your back is quitting. Covering up and stopping fighting is quitting. Turning and waving a fight off is quitting.

All of these Tank has done. Arcane logic informs me this makes Tank a quitter.

I did not say he wasn't entertaining. Hell, Tank's very excitement comes from the fact he is dangerous, yes, but has these "quitting holes" in his armor.

However, being exciting is one thing ... but being great is altogether different.

Tank is a dangerous bully when he has things his way, and a quitter when they turn away from his favor. Is this not the very recipe for excitement - to see which of the two will unfold "this time?"
