  • BJJ dicipline

Hi, i saw a clip on the net of this non-MA surfer guy getting pummeled by a guy who looked like he did BJJ (do you know the one i mean) because the BJJ guy had stolen his board or something and the surfer guy was just trying to reason with him, the surfer guy got taken to the floor and pinned down while the BJJ guy reined blows down on him, the surfer managed to get him in a headlock but the BJJ guys friend said "let go or i'll break your nose". This left me with a really cold feeling as i thought if the wrong kind of people learn an art like BJJ because they saw it on UFC or something and go looking for trouble then people are gonna get really hurt. I am basically asking do they teach self dicipline in BJJ schools? what are peoples views on this.

P.S please dont think that i am accusing or presuming BJJ is like this, i am just asking.

there's dicipline in most gyms/schools but there are alot of ma people who seem to get into street fights, too bad a gun beats ma any day though so if they keep it up one day someone will empty a clip into their stupid a** so karma in effect there. It's simply a case of male nature and that is something that both women and men need to understand, because of testosterone men are capable of proufound acts of violence at the drop of a hat it's in our nature it's how we were able to survive through the ages. In our modern punkass sweater wearing metro-sexual world violence is not a viable option unless attacked first so people need to control it some howi lost my point along the way but a gym without disapline is an invitiation to cahos.

If its the clip I am thinking of the kid completly deserved everything he got. Was it the one were it was a surfing tournament and the kid(who wasn't even in the tourny) wouldn't get out of the water? People go out to get him out of the water and the kid just starts decking people for no reason. Then he comes out of the water and starts mouthing off to people. Gets taking down and GNP?

possibly, the clip only started from the takedown i just read the rest of the story in a forum.
however even if the surfer guy was asking for it, which by the sounds of it he was, i feel an MAist has a duty to only use their art in self defence, which still holds my original point anyway. And i see very little honour in not letting the other guy defend himself.

        What do you reckon?

          Shit happens.

That kind of shit wouldn't happen in the gym. The instructor or other students would teach the offender a lesson or just plain kick him out.

On the street anything goes. That includes someone's buddy doing a "headlock escape" for them. Was it "manly" or honorable? Not really. Did it work? Yup. Just like an eye gouge or a bite. That's life.

very true. The clip made me wanna learn ways to escape and defend from GNP. Do they teach this in either japanese jujitsu, judo, or Hapkido as these are the only grappling/groundwork type arts i have accsess to?

I personally don't know of too many people who would devote their time/effort/money into something that requires much dedication like BJJ just to fight people on the street.

If anything, since being introduced to BJJ (as well as other martial arts) I have become less of a "hot-head" as I used to be. Although I'm 6'1 and 170 and cut, I'm not a very muscular guy or intimidating at that. I do have some training and always carry multiple blades which I can and will use if need be. The fact that I don't look like someone who others might see as someone that could hold his own well, it's made me more aware of the fact that the person in the car next to me, the guy at the local bar or any other random person for that matter might just not "look" like they could be trouble but....

Maybe expess your concerns with your teacher or others at your class. They maybe be able to show you some ways to avoid getting brought down to that postion in the first place. A good sprawl can save your a$$ from being put into a domionating position, I.E mounted.

the thing i most worry about is how devastating a guy skilled in bjj could be as a rapist. think about it, absolute control and the ability to apply pain. that's a scary prospect

good point. i wonder if schools check on peoples criminal background. I know my TSD school does.
BJJ seems to have got alot of people interested in MA recently. However alot of these people just like fighting and not the art side of it.
I think that some people are quite ignorant and dont understand that the fighters who step in the ring/octagon have great respect for eachother and after fights will shake hands a hug. Theyre not just thugs who want to beat down on people.

That clip was filmed on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. Those boys are not to be messed with, with or without BJJ.
