Don't know where that 400+ number ever came from... never heard Rickson use it, doesn't say at his website... but if you watch "Choke" you hear him announced of having that record.
I wonder who started it. There's a website I know where some dude looks into it.
It's easy to give Rickson Gracie a load of shit about his record, but that shouldn't degrade the man, or his skills. Everyone trashes Rickson these days, because it's the cool thing to do I guess, but the fact remains that he is, was, and will always be one of the single biggest innovators and pioneers in the BJJ world. Now that he's getting older and not fighting as much, people are bound to question his skill, but face it people, he's been competing in no-holds-barred type competition for 30 years in Brazil and overseas. Not to mention challenge matches that were nothing less than abundant in the earlier years of the Gracie Challenge before he broke with Rorion. Whether or not he has fought 464 times, I don't know. What I do know is that he'd probably kick the piss out of everyone on this forum, and that rather than trashing the guy, I'd bet that there's not a single one of us that wouldn't learn something from going out to train with him. Just my opinion.

You are preaching to the choir,Mike
No trash talk intended towards Rickson or any other fighter.I have a lot of respect for him-I even try to imitate his fighting style.I am not A Gracie-Worshipper or Trasher-I'm just curious about how close his fighting record is to being true.
well say rickson is 40, and say he started fighting at 18, which I am sure it was earlier than that. if his record is claimed to be NHB, street fights, and challenge matches he'd only have to fight about 1.5 times a month to reach 400 fights. this doesn't sound too unbelievable to me really. I am sure back in the day he was doing a lot of challenge matches and street fights. I'd imagine the scene of rickson beating hugo on the beach was not too uncommon in brazil back then. I somewhere heard before that rickson had 75 sport jiu-jitsu matches, all won by submission...
Playa, don't give me that crap. Rickson must have said this record on more than one occasion; in the first Japan Vale tudo it was in the high 300s and then in Choke for the second one it was over 400. Rickson is responsible for furnishing that stat to the promoters in Japan. He also got very defensive when asked about losing the sambo match to Ron Tripp and said he didn't understand the rules. If he didn't care he would just admit that he lost.
You are spot on Bahala.
I know that if I could train with anyone for 6 weeks it would be Rickson.
He has done it all in this game and more. There may be some suspiscion about his record, but who are we to bag the guy?
I'm keen to see Rickson vs Sak. Sak has done pretty well and fought to his strengths against the others, so it could be a top fight. Even though Rickson is 40(?), I still think he will tap him.
The only thing that bugs me is that Royce came out saying Mario's claimed record of like 150-0 going into Battlecade was a bunch of made up crap. Why is Mario a huckster with 150 fights but Rickson believable at 400?
Funny how Igor appeared to have a DEATH-GRIP on the octogon fence for the majority of that fight!
It's amazing how people seem to remember that match.
Igor spends the majority of the time RUNNING from Sperry.
Sperry seeing how Igor's chicken-shit teammate (John Lewis) used the EXACT SAME strategy against HIS teammate (Carlson Gracie Jr.) and "battled" to a DRAW, wanted to no part of the same outcome. He took a RISK (which is a HELL of a lot more than I can say for Igor during the ENTIRE match) and tried jumping onto him (while Igor was so "BRAVELY" facing AWAY!!) to get a choke.
Credit Igor for taking advantage of that mishap.
Watch the fight again...if you've forgotten how it REALLY went.
