  • To old to start BJJ?

    Greetings,

My first time to post to the forum. I have done MA since 1972, almost exclusively stand-up styles. Now I am 46 years old and would like to do some private lessons for BJJ. What can I expect and am I getting a little over the hill for this type of MA?

    Thanks in advance

    you're never too old

to train in ma hell I was going to fight till i was 40 atleast, in my mind if you can stand and you've got a f***** pulse you're go to go for fighting so training is no biggie, I'd stay away from mma stables though and go to a bjj school that works more with "normal" people though to be safe, hell I'm a gimp and train anywhere from 2-3 hours a day just for "fun" whatever the hell that is so nevr doubt yourself or look back ,you'll love bjj I think

      Cool.

Well put, I'm not really into the whole MMA thing except for watching, I think my tournament days are over...but you never know. I figure I can go until I'm 50 if I keep training with the kettlebells and all.

      Thanks for the reply.

          Excellent

It was either BJJ or Systema...heck I might do both, but I was told by a Judo person once that I was built for BJJ....not sure if thats good or bad!

You can expect to be welcomed to a new family. You can expect the best cardio workout of your life. You can expect to be humbled many times. You can expect to be addicted and look forward to every class and wish that they had some more classes through out the week. No my friend, you are not to old. we have a guy in my class that is 39 and rocking people half his age. Go for it bro! Just have the Ben gay handy cause you can also expect to be very, very sore for the first couple of classes.

Well it depends on what you want. If you plan to enter MMA events like pride and UFC realistically you are to old and you probably would not or could not sacrifice the time investment you would need to be extremely good extremley quick (like 4-6 years X days a week) I could be wrong though. Now if you just want to compete in Gi tounamnets , no problem. As for the age, well grappling is a differnt class of art and requires differnt conditioning an while running and other aerobic exercises help the only way to get in grappling shape is to grapple. Now as for your age, you are never to old to be attacked then you can never be too old to learn to defend yourself. But only you can be the judge, start and at least give it a month it you are not hooked before then.

Also you may want to post who the instructor is allot of people on this forum know BJJ and the good people. Unfortunately, while I would not say McDojo, there are definatly people who should not teach BJJ

It's the stand up stuff that you may want to shy away from as you get older. Did you know that Chuck Norris started to really get heavily BJJ because his body couldn't do the jump spin kicks anymore. Chuck still trains with the Machados and he is 65 now.

BJJ will keep you young and if you get sucked in,..may change your life. I read something written by Matt Thornton that really amazed me. He said, that people always comment that they might start training an art better siuted for weaker older folks...like tai chi, aikido, or wing chun, when they get older. Matt's reply to this is..if the young buck can't get the stuff to work, what makes you think it will magically work for the old guy? There is no substitute for good healthy, athletic training.

                    BJJ schools

Okay, I think my dreams may already be gone, the two BJJ schools I was thinking about checking out appear to be gone now. Can anyone suggest a school/instructor in the Kansas City,MO area?

                    Thanks again.

                      Check out this link

And may I suggest the GracieBarra school listed. It is taught by Daniel"Montanha" Nycz De Lima who is a Black Belt directly under Carlos "Carlinhos" Gracie Jr. Gonna be very hard to find something better then that over there.

                        Actually...

I work not to far from there and I think he's been gone for a couple of years now. I know their website is off-line and has been for quite some time.

                            Unfortunately no, but

...there is a Krav Maga school about 45 miles away that has a Brazilian Top Team school with a fighter named Suyan Queiroz. So far there has been no call back after two calls and an email.

                            *Sigh*

Suyan Queiroz is a BJJ black belt under Renato Ferro. Before I started at my school I emailed twice and never heard anything from them. I ended up just going down and started the very next day. A week later I got an email from my teacher. He was just busy and it was the first time he had even seen my emails. Go down, check it out man.
