anyone seen martial arts used in a street fight effectively?
When my ex was in Spain, two guys tried to mug him. He is a martial artist. They had a very bad day.
This is mearly one example of many I know. Martial arts is applicable, if you want to go into what style is most applicable, there are many threads on this forum to that effect. As far as size goes, I've only had to defend myself once, I'm a very small female, but I won (ok, mostly because I fought back at all and he wasn't expecting that, so he kinda ran for it, but still). Not going to lie, the bigger the size difference, the easier it is for the big guy, i.e. the better the small one's technique has to be, but all the more reason to train lots in my opinion.
Hope I helped.

Martial arts is a way of life. You might train for more than 5 years and never have to "really" use your fighting skills to defend yourself. It will be a situation that will last for 30 seconds to a few minutes at the most. Years and years of training condensed down into seconds. I guarantee you aren't going to be busting out a backstance or any complicated moves.
We aren't ancient warriors...we're not on the field of combat on a regular basis. So....
What your training will do for you is simply prepare you to have an aggressive person throwing attacks at you. If you get an attack off it's going to be something simple: double/single leg takedown, grab the neck and knee, escape a choke or wrist grab and punch them, then run. How do you get to the point where you don't freeze up and you're able to make the right choice in that split second? Training, training, training.
So how many times has a martial artist used their skills in a real situation? Every time they've ever been in a situation. Simple as that.
You're not going to see a kung fu person or a karate person or a BJJ person bust out a kata or drill in the middle of the street. It's going to be fast, simple, and precise. Most people will say "that's it? that's not martial arts!" Wrong. It is martial arts, it's just not the martial arts fags like Steven Segal have rammed down the public's throat.
Ha ha, right on Penance! Please note that I "won" because I started to put up a fight instead of freazing. In all honesty, I landed my first punch to his nose and then he was out of there, I don't even really consider it a fight. He beat it because he was looking for a unprepared damsil, not me.
To the other question, no I wasn't there. Chris said he knocked one out almost totally by luck, took the other at the knees, and ran for it.
And I would like to back up Penance one more time and say that I don't actually expect to get into a fight, but if I am, the biggest help from martial arts will be my ability to act as oposed to freaze up. What keeps me coming back to the gym is the huge difference it makes in my life in unrelated areas, if anything is unrelated. My dancing is better for it, my ability to focus is better, and I'm way more mellow (a big deal, as I can be...energetic). It's a huge part of my life and how I define myself, and I hope I never have to use it again.

Martial arts teaches "Mind Control".
So to have control of your mind, it would be sensible, as Boarspear does, not to train, but to drink, party, and frollic with half naked women. Then when a situation arises where you need martial arts, instead of relying on training, you just pull a gun and shoot. This is the best method of training because: you saved all those hours of training in a sweaty gym for hours with half naked women. Ill take half naked women anyday.
That's Master Jay Lee who teaches H2H for the Houston police dept. His rank is Kwang Jan Nim (Master) in KSW. He's probably been in the style now for a good 15 - 20 years.
Some martial arts can be effective if the people aren't stupid.
So can flinging your arms wildly.
(some arts will put you at such a disadvantage, you'd be safer curling up in fetal position, see the yellow bamboo and no-touch ko bullshit for reference)
What works for ME?...well, I think;
Boxing works. Muay thai works. Krabbi Krabong, silat and all the FMA's work. JKD...yes, jun fan gung fu...less. CSW, shooto, and BJJ rule the ground.
mix them all...and you'll have a good ability to transition between ranges of unarmed, edged, and impact weapons fights.

On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow

I've had to emply my skills "on the street" only once that I can remember. During that encounter my training was vital to reacting properly to the situation. A front kick was thrown at me and I somehow absorbed it--can't remember if I sidestepped, ate it, or what--but I did move past that straight into a clinch. He tried to toss me, but my grip was awesome and I pulled him to the ground (but I had control). In that split second moment my hands guided his to a placement right under my knees. So we're both in a kneeling position with his hands under the full weight of my body, his head down and my arms went straight in for the guillatene (sp?) choke. None of it was thinking, just 100% training muscle response. My body felt what was there and did its thing. That's how it should be for a decently trained martial artist. Luckily I had 2 other friends dealing with the other character while I choked his punk ass out. Having been in that situation alone, things would have undoubtably gone different. You do what you have to do, including running if you can and fighting only when neccessary. In my situation I thought we did a decent job of talking them down...until a foot came at me.
IMO, MA training can make the difference from a situation unfolding in that surreal slow-motion that a trained mind can deal with, or the fury of seeing red and not knowing what happened until after your friends explain the situation as they're reviving you up at the ER.

LOL I remember in HS a guy that would just swing is arms like a windmill... It was funny but it scared a few of the kids that used to make him mad for fun.
I like the way you present your opinion here G man. If I might add a little story to it for your enjoyment.
I started Judo when I was 16. I trained in the regular sport style with the rest of the class and was eager to dive into the SD and combative application of the art so after a year or so I asked to join his adult students. I was a small but strong 135 # and thought for sure I had the basics down well enough to hold my own or at least break my falls well enough to avoid serious injury. And I was right. Since then I have found my Judo in Kali, I found Judo in Silat (Bhakti Negara and others) I found Judo in JKD and it turns out I also found Judo in BJJ (Imagine my surprise! )

Nah, who said the drinkin and half naked women stopped just because we were training? we call it training under adversity Besides chances are if you get in a fight women and intoxicants are probably around anyway...now self defense situations are entirely different. Dont assume just because i play hard that i dont train even harder...its a bad idea to underestimate an opponent especially with what you think you know about him from the net
my martial arts has always helped me in street fights ofcourse, just a week ago i thrust kicked someone through the double bus doors, i could have jumped off the bus aswell to finish him while he was on the floor on the street, but i left it at that and didnt jump out after him it was unnecesary to take it any further. its funny how brawlers dont expect anything else but a punch to come at them, when a fast well placed kick is issued to a brawler it supprises them heh.
