  • What is the main punch to master.

Hi guys, I know this is a stupid question, but it keept bugging me. I asked my training mates were sort of divided.
Out of those punches, which one would you like to completely master.
    Jab
reverse punch or straigh rear hand
    Backfist
    or Hammer fist.

My master often tells us to master one technique and perfect a few to be a good fighter. Which technique to master is the question.

By reverse hand or straight punch I assume you mean the right cross?

or left cross if your a southpaw....

hmmm... personally Id go with an excellent jab.. as it could get me in for the clinch, or takedown... than I could to go knees or elbows...

but a more seasoned striker may take the straight cross... or both... or all of them....

I vote for the jab though..

i would have to say the jab. many amateur boxers i have worked with have won fights solely on the jab. you will throw that one the most, and it can keep people distant...IF your an ali fighter. if your a frasier, choose an uppercut or hook. the uppercut is the most neglected punch so most probably dont expect it.

Are you sparring , sport or self defense?

For self defense most definately the hammer fist, can end a situation quickly.

For sport, nothing like a jab. The best boxers had the best jabs and it was their forte.

One boxer who comes to mind is Larry Holmes. His jab was awesome and set him up.

I am just wodering. Let's say you have a great jab, it can control the opponent, but you can't keep controlling forever. At some point you must strike hard. What happens if you don't have that hard weapon. Is the jab any good than?

If you wanna be a great fighter---Master defense....Blocks, parries, foot mobility, ducking, bobbing, weaving............Defense, that's the key. Sorry to throw you a curve but I could not resist.

For wrestling defense you need to learn counters, escapes and reversals. Ah Ha, you thought you had me.

Let's say you are good at everything else, but lack a strong weapon, capable of knocking out, than what?

I saw a recent boxing match between Joe Calzaghe (sp?) and some other guy. He broke his hand in like the 2nd round. I cant remeber if the fight was stopped in a very late round our it went all the way. But Calzaghe won by just using the jab. Nuff Said.

Jab, definitely the jab. Contrary to popular belief, a good stiff jab can stop you in your tracks.

                              And. . . .

It's great to set up nearly any other technique be it striking or grappling.
