  • Private Lessons - Material I Should Buy and Awesome Books on Jiu Jitsu and Karate

Hello, Just wanted to say hi./

In my oppinion you should steer away from the karate as alot of it is bs....id suggest muay thai because you will actually have stand up skills you can use in a fight.....however if you have your heart set on a karate style go with kyokushin its pretty hardcore as other karate arts are more kata and stuff.

nope muay thai is from thailand.....they call it the art of 8 limbs because it uses very powerful shin kicks...knees...elbows and clinching techniques along with western style boxing punches and sometime if rules permit (in thailand most of the time) bare knuckles wrapped in rope and headbutts.Muay thai is a full contact martial art where you will become a great striker as long as you train hard under a good coach.

In Muay Thai there are no secrets. Just be prepared to work hard. Good training!

I have trained in muay thai for about over a year now.Like aseepish said hard work will pay off for you the most.....only through hard work and actually training against resistance using timing, energy and motion will you begin to grow as a martial artist. Some of the filler in karate i spoke of was kata training and 99% of their so called self defense techniques which are always dead patterns that simply do not work when resistance is applied. Not all schools and systems are like this but about 98% are.Good luck and if you need any more info just ask away bro.

kata training is a series of moves done in a pattern.....in alot of martial arts that have kata you have to memorize like 13 of them or how ever many....maybe one for like each belt or something. As far as resistance goes they practice their self defense techniques very unrealisticly....like you are bolth in a horse stance and the guy comes at you with a reverse punch and you do a series of moves to the guy and he just sits there and cooperates.Very much like a coreographed dance, their logic is that this series repeated enough times will make you able to preform it in a combat situation (which it def will not)by resistance i mean training with progressive resistance and then applyling what you learned in sparring.Progressive resistance basically means that you start with no resistance and work the technique to get the proper mechanics down(most karate and kung fu tkd etc etc arts stay at this and move on to a new technique without developing the nessicary attribues to use the move)then you gradually increase the amout of resistance of your partner till you get up to about 90%...then it moves on to sparring and going 100% resistance. After awhile of training like this what works in a real fight begins to reveal itself to you and you will develop real skills you can use at any time.
