I totally understand Darren and John's side.
Imi Lichtenfeld, the FOUNDER of the system gave Darren FULL right and authority to be the only source of Krav Maga in the states.
And he did so for a very important reason: to safeguard Krav Maga from becoming a generic term for a style of martial arts. If that would occur, all of the principles, curriculum and teaching style would be lost. It would just turn into another martial art out there. Have you ever been to different karate schools? Or Taekwondo schools? There are good ones and bad ones and very very bad ones. The problem is that krav maga would becomes a blend of krav maga and someone else's idea of what they think it should be.
Krav is such a strong system with great principles and teaching style. Instructors are rigorously taught how to teach the krav maga curriculum in the manner it was intended. This is what sets it apart from other martial arts, aside from the obvious (learning curve, intensity, realistic self defense drills, etc.). I know the liscensing fee is a ton, but it's so worth it to keep the system pure. People come from all over for krav maga. If they can get it at any school, by instructors who were not trained properly, then krav maga is lost all together.
By the way, these same people who so self righteously claim that no one should own the name Krav Maga all email Darren and John privately to say that they won't oppose them...as long as they get to own it, too. In their oppositions to them, the two other sides (Eyal, as one, and David Kahn and the IKMA as the other) will say that the name is generic. However, they BOTH offered to remove their oppositions if they could own the name. So it's not that they don't think the name should be owned. They just want to be cut in on the action! Pure hypocrisy.
Imi in his wisdom, foresaw this decades ago. I'm glad Darren and John are not compromising.

Many of you have seen or probably will see the article in Black Belt magazine on "Commando Krav Maga."
Well, another legal fight is already underway.
Again, John isn't arguing about whether the techniques are good or bad. They are simply outright NOT what Imi wanted for the Krav Maga system.
Those who disagree with the efforts to protect the name have a perfect right to disagree. However as John stated "you should be open-eyed about it. If you win, you will not be protecting the rights of everyone to do Krav Maga. You will allow everyone to do whatever they want and call it "Krav Maga." The difference between these two things is enormous, and tragic."
