  • How long till K-1 level?

I have been doing TKD for seven years now and I plan to add hapkido and boxing to my regimen.

I am currently 16 years old but I've only gotten serious about martial arts recently.

How long would it take me to get to the level of those K-1 guys or just in general to become a great fighter?

I don't want to sound mean or anything, but I don't think you will get upto k-1 level doing tkd or hapkido or even a comibation of them. tkd and hapkido are great martial arts, but I belive the arts like muay thai, kickboxing, and sans shou would be much better in you want todo k-1. Those martial arts in my opionion are much superior than tkd or hapkido. so if you want to do k-1 i would sugest you start training in muay thai, kickboxing, or san shou.

No i beg to differ, K-1 is all about bringing your own martial art into it and using its stengths THEN combining it with others, do not be fooled by the generalisation that TKD is weak because frankly, it isn't, the same applies to hapkido. Iv'e seen plenty of amazing knock-outs with high kicks from Rene Bonjasky, Peter Aerts, Musashi, you name them. Anyway its the person not the Martial Art hehe

bonjansky.....aerts..... are muay thai guys.....musashi is a karate and boxing fighter.Tkd might get you to k-1 level but its not very likely seeing as how there have been less then 5 tkd people in k-1 and all were not in the least bit successfull. As for you getting to k-1....anything is possible if you are willing to sacrifice what is nessicary to achive that goal.

tkd is great ...dont forget bas rutten was a 4th degree in tkd ......but he also moved on to thai kickboxing and competed there.....i think your on the right track here but instead of hapkido , try brazilian jiu jitsu combined with boxing , thai kickboxing and your tkd background ....this will make you a very complete and formidable opponent ready for k1.

I think he most probably will be aiming for pure stand up without any ground work.

JkD187 i wasn't saying that they were TKD fighters but the techniques they use are very prominant in TKD so what difference will it make? to fight in these you have to cross-train anyway so its a good base. TKD will hold him in a good position, already giving him the ability to knock opponents out with high kicks... (for the sake of arguement im not just saying TKD is purely kicks or any other mumbo jumbo you might see implimented in my comment)

This wasn't supposed to be a "is TKD effective" thread.

And to you people that think TKD is inferior...

              **** YOU.

lol... K-1 is mostly white people, leaving out the millions and millions of asians who could potentially be great fighers...

honestly, do you think some punk UFC kid could take out a gradnmaster? please... not in this lifetime

Go for it mate, but remember K1 is full of politics

Bang on my friend. I have only in the last 9moths began fighting in full contact MMA. I have practiced wing chun for 12years. I began training in Muiy Thai in the last 4 years(when I was about your age,16) This is where I learned the art of total fighting, yes you need to experience pain, condition your body and find out what is effective, but your system will always help you.I felt that the transition between the two was easy and I was already at an advantage. I train my own way for fights. Get training in full contact points-stop-start, then work up to continous fighting. Theres no limit, be strong but never reaching, be offesive but always defensive, real fighting is just more possability and more testosterone. lol jamie
