  • Judo or Wrestling?

Im currently learning thai kickboxing, but im thinking of taking a grappling art as well. My school actually has a bjj class on tuesdays and thursdays, but it is only groundwork, and i can only attend it once a week because of soccer practices on thursdays. I was wondering whether you think I should train judo or wrestling alongside this to learn takedowns, standup grappling etc. Im pretty sure its grecoroman wrestling, so since the 2 arts focus on the same areas im not sure which to choose. Im thinking of maybe going to watch or doing a trial class if they allow me, but I was wondering if you have any useful input on the subject.

    Here are the websites:

Kind of depends on whether you plan on doing BJJ gi or no gi. If gi, then Judo for sure. If no gi, then I guess it depends on whether or not you feel you will be able to adapt it to no gi situations. Wrestling seems to give people a good basis to work from in BJJ, but there is a lot that doesn't apply, is ineffective, or will get you owned in a BJJ setting.

Check them both out. I think wrestling is nice and all but the groundwork is pin-oriented and thats not very logical in a fight. In judo you will end up focusing on throws, but the groundwork will involve chokes and armbars and such.

try both places, but in general judo is more of a martial art.

I personally wrestle, but if I could practice judo, with all the throws/hold/submissions/possitions of judo, I would take it over wrestling, which is very agressive and promotes good takedowns, as long as you defend the guillotines.... but its all about the pin, while juso involves positions of advantage in a fight, and submissions.

I do love wrestling, don't get me wrong, it gives people this aggressive drive, all wrestlers I know are very aggressive and strong and are decent at controlling peoples bodies in the grapple.

Pound for pound, though, aggressiveness is only going to wear you out. If what you mean is "fighting spirit" then who can say whether wrestlers or BJJ people have more of it? I think that comes down to individual differences.

Put someone with 10 years of wrestling against someone with 10 years of BJJ, same weight...who will win? Be honest now, you know the BJJ guy is going to school the wrestler. BJJ is about patience, staying calm, using your body weight and gravity to its fullest. It's about technique and using your head. I'm not trying to say that wrestlers are stupid and don't use technique, but wrestling is very power and speed oriented, I think. Even if the wrestler has better takedowns, or is more aggressive, BJJ has better defense and a better overall game plan.

Same weight, same skill time in their respective arts, a BJJ person has far more tools at their disposal than a wrestler.

ugh, this is about JUDO and WRESTLING, not BJJ and WRESTLING.

Good call with the who will take who with 10 years of training thing. that is why i would always choose judo, its a MARTIAL ART! I agree that wrestling = speed and strenth (aggressiveness that most good wrestlers have), this can be a good thing at times, but obviously a martial artist (judoka), even if taken down with a single leg, would still find a way to pull gaurd and work a choke or a submission.

still, i do think wrestling has plenty of benefits.

                  Which wrestler? Which BJJ-er?

"You know", do you? Ok, 10 years. How many years experience do you have in both?

if u wanna learn throws dude, greco is the way to go, thats all it is, can't saying learning judo as well wouldn't help though. learning both would be better than learning either by itself.

(above comment): yea, greco is very nice, and judo is as well, both would be awsome.

(2 comments up): when I typed "(judoka)" right after "the martial artist", I entended the two to be connected. It would be the judoka pulling gaurd and working submissions, because though the wrestler has solid takedowns and good control of wieght/momentum/ect... if he IS in fact a wrestler then he knows nothing about submissions or even the position of gaurd, where he would likely feel in control when in fact he is not.

The question was: Which Judoka? Its not a hard question

For the bonus round: Which wrestler?

Have you gotten the point yet, or do you need a graph or something?
