I know a lot of threads are coming up like this but please bare with me. I am interested in studying a number of martial arts, simutaneously, namely; muay thai for standup, BJJ for ground work, and sayoc kali for weapons.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to begin my studying in a class yet due to my current location. I am planning to begin once I move in the next few months.

Here is my predicament: I have been reading more about judo and becoming more interested in it. The problem is, I do not believe I can study 4 martial arts properly at the same time.

So, I am wondering what everyone's opinions are. Is judo a good thing to add, or is BJJ enough for grappling? Should I take out muay thai and only have grappling arts? Whats your advice?

Thanks everyone, your knowledgable advice is very appreciated.

    S.C.

P.S. I am only interested in practical self defence, not fitness, a hobby, or anything else.

the fact is, if u were proficient in even just one of these arts alone, u have a better chance at defending yourself in a bad situation than most people. just pic one and start training.

Yeah, Pic whichever suits your mentality best and get a good foundation in it first. Then you can look into cross training in another later if you still feel the need. Dont try to learn everything at once or you just end up mediocre at all of them.

It may be legal in the US, but it is not in many countries! Therefore it is not an option to defend myself using any sort of weapon.

Are you saying that "Martial" excludes empty hand combat? If that is the case you are not recognising the origin of the term "Martial art" or the fact that the US Army (for example) learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA as part of their unarmed combat program.

No I am not in fear of bodily harm or death! Why should I be?

No, I'm not saying anything of the sort... It's a rhetorical response to a hypothetical scenario, nothing personal. I realize the laws of other countries are more strict toward anything in your hand intended to inflict bodily injury is a WEAPON. A flashlight is a small baton. Learn some stick fighting techniques and see how many more than one or two will take a beating? (Most attacks happen after dark) Numbers are relative but usually THEY have weapon(s) so it's only logical to be armed (with SOMETHING) regardless of the letter of the law. It's the difference between being a citizen and being a subject of your government... .

Actually "Martial" is only that which is related to the Roman god of war (Mars) Since I don't worship that god I'm not really a Martial artist at all...

If you bring a gun or knife (or any weapon) to a fight that you havent trained to use: IE the martial arts...you just provided the other guy with a weapon.

Hehehe... yup. Statistically one in five LEO's shot in the line of duty is shot with his own weapon. Go figure!
