What is the best way to escape, from the bottom position, when your opp. is riding with his knee on your stomach? Looking for opinions.

The position is called Ukigatame. Check out Judo Info Site...

The first escape and easiest escape I learned for this is to put one hand in their waist (or belt), the other on their knee, and hip outward so you slide out from under the knee. This is where shrimping drills really help.

Yeah push really hard on the guys knee while doing a hip escape or i guess this guys school calls it shrimping, same thing. . Do it fast or youll be tapping. You shoud get to half guard at least or go to your knees

Another option is to bump them forward hard with your knee, then turn into them and drive for a single leg take down.

This is a good one. The way I know it is -

Op in Knee on belly on my Right side. Slide my R hand under his R leg and grab as high on his pants as possible at the back. Straighten my R arm to lift his R foot off of the ground. Now put my Left hand in his chest. Pull with my R hand and push with my L to sweep him backwards. Change my base to end in SM.

Be careful on timing. Remeber, you are tying up both arms to do this. Make sure he is not busy choking you at the same time.

Jiu Jitsu Monk, this is kind of what I had in mind. Is there a way to crank the knee, the one on the stomach, by leverage on the same ankle, to initiate the escape? I would think an under hook of that leg, at the ankle, followed by a push pull, would prompt some movement from the top guy.

I'm not sure what you mean by "crank the knee". from under knee on stomach I doubt you would have the leverage to casue any pain. Just grab the ankle of the leg that is on your stomach or preferabl,y hook you arm under and grab the pants/belt as high as pooss then push the waist, pull the legg and sit up. Try it on an acommodating oponent to start and as you get better get your partner to build up the resistance. Then try it in sparing. Ya know the only thing I don't like about this one is that whilst doing it your neck is exposed for a whole bunch of chokes.

The other way I like is - I am under knee on stomach with op on my R side. stay tight and defend. Let op put one hand in the collar (most people this will be his L hand) as he brings the R hand through to choke you, grab the sleeve with you L hand. Bring your L knee up and inside his arm into the crook of his elbow. Put your R hand in his chest and push with your R. Push with your knee and sit up at the same time. You have to get the timing right and be good at defending the choke. But it catches people unawear!

With this one I know I am not going to get choked and the arm bar is unlikely too. Again try with a partner who will let you do the move to get good at it. Then try in sparring.

Be careful pushing on the knee. If you leave space between your arm and body, you are open for an armbar. Another espape is grabbing the ankle and pushing the knee as you shrimp out. As you free yourself, raise your 'pushing' arm up to keep distance and try and regain guard or half-guard.
