Is this a newbie thing or can I expect to have scabby bleeding knees and elbows throughout my entire BJJ career?

Depends on what you are doing. If you're wearing a gi with top and pants you usually won't lose much skin. No-gi however more of your body is exposed. Sometimes I still lose chunks of my skin because someone doesn't clip their toenails or fingernails.

We do two nights a week with a gi and two nights a week in whatever athletic gear we want. On the nights that we can wear whatever we ant I wear my gi bottoms and a long sleeve dry fit shirt. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm wearing, I end up leaving with no skin on my knees and elbows...and of course it wont heal because I continually rub it raw.
It's not that big a deal to me, it only causes a little pain at the beginning of sparing and then I totally forget about it. It's just a little gross.
Do you guys ever have any concern about the bodily fluids that get rubbed in your face, dripped on you, run in your eyes, etc...seriously, you're in some tight situations and you have no idea what you're opponent could have. There are some things, like hepatitis for instance, that could easily be transferred by sweat or saliva. Even worse is what could be transmitted if someones bloody knee were to come into contact with your bloody knee.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not seriously worried about it...It's just crossed my mind. Ever cross yours?
