  • Want to use Taekwondo for MMA comps.

I plan to mix Taekwondo, Judo, and Boxing and create my own MMA sort to speak.

I have full confidence that Taekwondo is a good standup art and one of the best kicking arts. Opinons?

I want to use Taekwondo, a great kicking and distance standup art as a base, and add Judo and Boxing. Opinons?

boxing works better with the thai style kicks in my opinion. nailing your sidekick will be harder from a boxing stance. its easier to see, since u have to turn your hip towards the target. thai style kicks are the best to use with boxing, as they can come right off the boxing stance.

I know boxing's awesome. Maybe I should rephrase. I personally think in terms of kicking, Taekwondo is only rivaled by Muay Thai.

So in your opinons, as a KICKING art, would Taekwondo serve me well in vale tudo competitions?

I guess its just a different way of throwing kicks, and different kicks are used in each respective art. I don't know too much about TKD but all the places that theach it where I am blow, though I would think it's kicks are valid (though some are a bit flashy) since it is the most popular martial art in the US, possibly the world.

Boxing has got some good stuff, good crisp boxing skill is a beautiful thing, but brawling makes me queesy.

Same with judo, I think that as long as you're not being Gi oriented you will be alright. Although, it may be advisable to know how to do takedowns that work without a gi (big hip throws are much harder, leg takedowns are normally easier), but I'm sure if you adapt and tie up your leg sweep and some of your hip throws and sacrifice throws will serve you well. You might want to leard how to defend leg submissions, because I don't think that is covered in Judo very often. You don't need to know leg submissions, just how to get out of them and go for more relyable submissions you learned in Judo.

        I love Judo

              Go for it!

Competing in MMA is a great way to show those TDK nay-sayers that they're wrong! Or in the event that they're right, it's a great way to convince you of that fact.

Like 3 or 4 of the guys in the UFC are TKD black belts. So go for it dude. But if judo is the only grappling you're going to have in your style I'd reconsider doing any MMA. Judo is good man, the throws are nice but some no gi total ground game style should be in your arsenal. You could do wrestling, or no gi JJ or BJJ. Your recipe for your style sounds like a pretty damn good one for stand-up but fighting off your back and keeping someone else on theirs are esential tools for every fighter.

it depends how u train tkd. if u are the regular tkd guy who is severly limited by all the rules or train at a mcdojo, no it wont serve u well in mma competitions. if u are one of the more hardcore tkd guys who trains tkd techniques in order to use them in fights and mix it with other arts then yeah it can be good. how do u train? i know for a fact that there are many tkd schools that are really all about self defense and using it to fight, and they used tons of techniques from other arts as well. so yeah, like always.....it depends.

I dont see why you couldn't. Just watched a match between David Loiseau and Charles McCarthy, Dave won with a sweet spinning back kick. Landing right in the middle of McCarthy's ribcage, was a very nice kick. Hes a TKD blackbelt as well.

Do you guys think Muay Thai is a better kicking art?

Like for example, in a purely kicking-only fight, who would have the upperhand, tkd man or mt man?

Check out UFC 1 {??} with Royce Gracie and Kimo. Kimo would have won if he did not wear a ponytail. Royce grabbed Kimo's ponytail and would not let go. Kimo was listed as a TKD Black Belt. He really Rocked Royce in that fight even though Royce got the win. Never saw Kimo wear a ponytail again.

Of course the tkd has the upperhand in kicking, but it takes more than some fancy kicks to win a fight. From some of the kicks I have seen from a muay thai fighter is that their kicks are kind of simple to do, but at the same time powerful. As for the tdk kicks they are too complex. Some of their best kicks you have to jump in the air.

The point I'm trying to make is that tkd has better kicks, but most of them are too hard to do n for the muay thai fighters. They have some simple kicks, but they are also powerful ones.
