Not sure what style you want the gi for. For bjj, I have a MKimono single weave, and recently picked up a Mizuno single weave (for judo/jiu-jitsu). You definitely want something heavier than 8oz if you are going to do any kind of grappling. It will involve lots of moves which involve heavy pulling and holding of the gi. Anything not designed for this kind of abuse will definitely rip in short time.

Yes heavy gi's are nice, not like a judo gi. One of my gi's is a 14 ounce canvas. Looks very nice and lasts forever. I have a judo gi for BJJ, it's a swain s-series. Much heavier than any karate gi and would not be suitable for karate.

The shuraido 50/50 is an awesome uniform but at 300+ it's a bit pricey, especially for class. I have a shuraido 100. I think Tokaido or something like that are decent uniforms as well. Sorry if the spelling is off, I don't write these out much.

I know what you mean about having to iron all the time. My experience is that even all cotton gi's of heavier weights don't need ironing as long as you hang them up. It seems that the weight of the material pulls out the wrinkles.
