  • Input on the styles?

AFter three months of searching, I finally find out from a friend one day that there is a MA place right next to WalMart... Ironic, pathetic, and a little humiliating...
ANyway, This place teaches BJJ, Kickboxing, and Judo. I was wondering if any of you could tell me more about these styles, and possibly help me conclude with which one to take. I do have fighting experience, but not in any specific style. Mainly I go to unnoficial 'tournaments' and fight there. Well, even though there are experienced fighters at these events, I wish to have some more in a specific MA to be involved in more-official competitions. That, and so I get more of a challenge than i already do. So, so I stop my redundancy, I will ask my questions now.
-What do these three MAs focus on?
    -How do they train?
-How focused on competitions/tournaments are they (in your experience)?

Any other info would be great, but these three questions are my main concerns at the time.
THanx to those who actually read this

Welcome bro...BJJ focuses on positions and submissions.....achiving a dominant position and flowing into a submission is what its all about.BJJ also has many sweeps and submissions from off your back in the guard.BJJ training methos is usually learned by the coach demonstrating a tech....you apply it with no resistance...they grad increase resitance untill your doing it with full resistance. After every coaching session you will get to put the moves you learned into action by sparring with your opponent....people will go hard but if you tap you will not be injured.Gyms vary as to comp some go to like every tourny and some go too a few...usually if you tell them you wanna compete they will back you up.

Kickboxing is a broad term...kickboxing can be many things but most places teach Muay Thai so ill go with that.Muay thai utalizes punchs kicks knees and elbows with standup grappling and clinching. The heart and soul of Muay Thai is the knees and elbows from the clinch and its very fast and powerful low kicks. The training method is very tough...you will do alot of cardio and bag work...mit work and sparring.Muay thai is prob the most physicaly demanding of all martial arts in my opinion.Comp is the same as BJJ there are small venues around citys....ask around the gym to find out the specs.

Judo is a martial art that focuses on throwing techniques with limited ground work and submissions. The goal in judo is to throw your opponent for an IPON which means he lands flat on his back after a throw with bolth shoulders on the mat.Judo has 29 grappling techniques that are used...rarely will you find a school that focuses on Ne-waza(subs) so you will most likely be on your feet most of the time.Comp is the same just ask around your gym.

I hope this helps bro! good luck.

Yeah, I wish it was Muay Thai, for thats what I was hoping on finding. But, I'm pretty sure it's not. If it is, then I am most certainly taking that. Mainly I am looking to work on my striking in reaction to their striking(my weakness seems to be punching, because i can usually 'out kick' anyone i face). Other than striking, I wish to throw the opponent, because I can rarely implement a solid throw. Thanx for yur help man. Any other info?

If that's what you want to improve I would suggest you find a good San Shou school. It will really improve your standup and throwing techniques.

Hey, my thread, i ask da questions! lol, im just kidding, Seany.

-What are these fight tournaments you enter-Theyre sorta like parties held to get together and fight. THyere not scheduled, they just happen. I missed the last two.T-T

-How did you do- Pretty good. ie only been to 3 of the party/competitions, and have gotten to the 2ndlast round/placed 5th at worst. The last one i went to I got 2nd, and before that 1st. It was the first one that i went to that i got 5th.

-What rules are they, and is there protective gear?- usually, you cannot leave the fight and 'groin shots' arent encouraged. It happens, but usually people are true to the rules. No equipment including gear. After wards they have other fighting for fun using staffs, etc, but i dont compete in that. I am good w/ a stick, but I like hand to hand whenever possible. when i do participate i get w/in the 3 best(usually). The weapons fights are what got me interested to come in the first place, but unarmed fighting is what i love the most.
-also where did you learn to kick?- Well I never really learned. I used to to fight w/ friends when i was younger, and we always made it fun by saying "no hands", etc. So when it was feet only, I got the best results. Since then i worked on my leg strength using ankle weights and excersizing. Kicking strength along w/ my flexibility allows me to black lower attacks quite easily, not to mention get in those extra hits and transition hits needed to win. Also, when not fighting among friends, this helps me finish unwanted fights w/ 'enemies' quickly with a kick to the face when an unblocked opportunity comes. Fighting is fun, but not when its not needed. Don't get me wrong, I can use my hands, knees, and elbows, but kicking is my main strength.

~What about you? What competitions do you endure? How do you like to fight(Style or description)? ANy rules in those comps? If your taking a style, what style and why did you choose it? is there a specific way you like to fight?
Je, just thought id counter w/ some questions of my own...

oh, just noticed the other question

umm i study Tang Soo Do, i got into it because i was learning Taekwondo from a book with a freind, but we thought we should probably get a teacher. We looked around but (as i couldnt drive at the time) there was no TKD near enough, then i saw TSD and i saw that it was Korean also, so i thought it might be similar. I was wrong its nothing like TKD, but most ppl will tell you thats a good thing.
I love TSD because of the discipline aspects (very strict ettiqatte) it is very realistic in its application of techniques, there is no mystical, deadly, flashy moves. just what works.

ALso theres the minor set back as to that i do not the correct protective gear anyway.lol
