  • Need grappling to supplement striking. Judo?BJJ?

Yo wassup. I need some advice. I need a grappling art to supplement my striking skills. Which do you recommend, Judo or BJJ and why?

I understand Judo is a better standup grappling style while BJJ is a better ground grappling style. Which is more valuable?

I've been hearing things like Judo is a sport. But it is still a very much a combative martial art, no?

BJJ newaza owns Judo newaza, too i heard. True?

These are stereotypes based on truths. Both are valid martial arts and sports in themselves, and are useful on the street. For me, I would decide which establishment I liked the most and then decide from that.

      ?

      Neither. You need wrestling.

don't listen to that nonsense. Wrestling provides no submission holds, which are exactly what you need. Wrestling is great for takedowns and positioning, but the juice is in the subs. If you can, train at a MMA club that combines bjj with wrestling or judo takedowns and some striking.

Always listen to my nonsense. What you need to make use of your striking skills while getting the most of a grappling exchange is positional control and the ability to takedown an opponent when you want to and to avoid same when its not in your best interests.

If your opponent has a Gi on judo has many more throws. No gi Bjj or wrestling are your best bet.

I love all three but I don't think you can take them all. BJJ is the best from the three in my opinion for a solid grappling art. It has moves from wrestling and Judo some you get the best of both worlds. I think with wrestling it is even more deadly. Pick BJJ from the three and do some wrestling as well. In high school wrestling is free if they have it and in college usually as well or for small price so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.
