  • egos in the martial arts

Why is it that someone becomes proficent in a martial art their head grows out of proportion to their body? What is the deal with that? There are grapplers that think that bjj is the best and strikers that think that their style is the best. Things never happen the way they do in the dojo, especially under a stressful situation such as a violent attack. When the chips are down it is heart and determination that count, when technique fails. There is no "best" martial art if there was everyone would do it. You can learn all of the techniques and forms in the world, but if you lack the heart to really hurt someone who is trying to do you in, you are going to lose. I doubt that many if any of the people in this forum have ever been in a life or death situation, where some crackhead is trying to kill you.

Lets be realistic people, if you are faced with a threat like a gun thrust in your face most people will freeze and will not be able to react. A knife is worse because it is silent and can be concealed easily, when facing some one with a knife you ARE going to get cut, face it that is a fact. Now I am not an expert, and I don't claim to be I only hold the rank of purple belt in Ed Parker's Kenpo Karate. I don't care how many times the Gracie's have won a NHB event, or how many times that Joe Lewis won a kick boxing match, there is ALWAYS someone out there the can kick the shit out of you. Having a black belt dosen't give you instant credibility. All styles of martial arts have weaknesses, and all offer something for someone. So lets put all the B.S. behind us and move forward, and learn from each other.

These reality checks are something I think we all are aware of.I doubt there are many here who want to be in a confrontation of any kind outside of a ring. For those very reasons.

          Good point!

I agree with Kenpo-power. I have had a gun in my face and I pussed out. Luckily the guy with a gun was a bitch. If he didin't have that gun i would have kicked his ass, but since he did he was in control. BJJ doesn't say when a gun is pulled on you 50% you will go to the ground.

Kenjeet, I was training with a guy in baltimore, but he turned out to be a real ass(his name won't be mentioned out of respect for his abilities. He was the east coast rep for the IKKA, but then switched to Jeff Speakmans clan, where he is now a national director. I am currently searching for a new instructor, and was thing of checking out Joe Palanzo's school in Timonium, Md since it is only about 25 mins from my home. It is hard to find a good Kenpo school that is within driving distance from my home. It seems that just about every school that I inquire about is connected to the dude I used to go to. I doubt if I would get a fair deal when test time came around and I had to stand in front of this guy. By the way where do you train and what rank do you hold.

I know what you mean Dark, a few years ago a friend of mine was drunk because he had broken up with his then girlfriend, and wanted to kill himself. WE(my cousin was also there) didn't know that he had a gun tucked into the back of his pants, and were trying to be a friend when out of nowhere he pull this 9mm ruger out of pants and says he is going to kill himself. We were like yeah right shut up and put the gun down before you shoot yourself, well he didn't like that and then turned the gun on us and implyed that we couldn't stop him. Well to end this long story we all ended up on the floor of his kitchen wrestling over this gun, which we finally got away from him. At the time we didn't really think anything of what we had done(wrestling over a gun, but then it hit us. That was one of the scariest and dumbest things that I have ever done. Having a gun in your face is no fun.

I think that the ego problems depend alot by the way you train. Personally I think that the less one spar hard and test himself, the more scared he is from real fighting. I didn't say that one must beat himself to death everytime, but, if you spar real hard, and with alot of different partners, you will find a nasty surprise, YOU WILL GET BEAT, SOONER OR LATER. More than two hours ago I was training in a Gym where I held a class. I have a flu; I'm on zero carb diet so I was tired as hell. Just the right time to spar...

Boys, this night I was schooled and taken down by a guy that has six months MMA experience. I was trembling, sweating, and finally I got mounted. I defended from blows and finally sweep him, but, it was awfully hard...

If you fight for real, you will be a humble one. Guarantee.
