  • Judo questions

    Hi,

I've been considering taking judo for a couple months now. However, when I asked several people, they told me that it was ineffective for combat and that it is just as sport.

What do you guys think? Is Judo alone an effective means of combat and self defense?

I think what is an important factor to consider is the toughness of the sport. Many judoka end up with hip problems, shoulder problems, and arthirtis in their hands (I knew a champion judoka from the US who was about 30 with the worst arthiritis I have ever seen in his hands and he blamed it on judo).

That does not really answer my question.

I know but its an important fact to consider in taking it up.

An answer to your question: it is useful to an extent. It is part of an equation of stand up fighting, throws, and locks/breaks. Judo mainly focuses on the throws and therefore lacks any real striking (by stand up i mean striking) while also lacking ways to finish opponents. It was originally started as a way to make Jiu Jiutsu less dangerous.

Yeah, and I'm just waiting for someone to run an IP search on the Mastah dude. Sounds awfully familiar.

Judo is mainly sportive. I wish I knew more about Judo and if Kano intended it to be only sport with no strikes/ dirty self-defence shit. Anywho, Judo is valid and useful. Though you will be wearing a Gi, clothing can often take it's place for throws, handles, and chokes on the street. In Judo, much emphesis is placed on the throws/takedowns involved. This is nice for the street, where it may be dnagerous to roll around. However, Judo Newaza (ground technique) is not as colorful as BJJ, but it sticks to the basics and I find a lot of use in it. You won't find and foot locks or inside-out twisting superduper neck crank attacks, but you'll learn effective chokes and uppoer-body joint manipulation.

of course its tkd guy. the account is obviously new since he only has 4 posts. its the same lame question, and again dan answers as if his backyard wrestling with his friends have him qualified to tell other beginners advice on martiala arts and their "effectiveness".

tkd guy, u need to hurry up and sign up at a muay thai or bjj school already cause we all know thats all u really want. stop denying it to yourself and go train already.

Could be wrong but this thread seems a little more articulate then KDH and TKD gays posts. But only time will tell.

Are you serious? Why don't you ask someone that knows what the hell they're talking about?

Yeah, Judo is "just" a SPORT. That crap is useless for SD! About as good as the advise in this thread.

Judo is about putting them on the deck, breaking bones and choking them out...No finishing techniques my ass! Judo is a striking art! SEE: ATEMIWAZA

Judo alone is just fine for SD.

It helps to know the atemi if you plan to fight...

All Kodokan Judo techniques (wazas) are divided into three groups:
                          Nage-waza (67 throwing techniques)
                          Katame-waza (29 grappling techniques)

                          AND!

                          Atemi-waza (22 striking techniques)

                          ~Ashi-ate-waza~
                          (6 leg techniques)

                          ~ Ude-ate-waza~
                          (16 arm techniques)

                          ANY MORE QUESTIONS!?

Actually reading 4 Judo books and reading stuff on the internet (here and at other sites, such as judoinfo.com) give me knowledge that I feel is relyable enough to give adviseon the topic. I also grapple with this Judo once a month or so (he shows up at URI's MMA club now and again) and I've seen his ground technique and takedowns myself. Also, much of the "BJJ" stuff I use is actually Judo technique as well.

Also, agreed with Tant, Judo is fine for self defence and has many techniques useful on the street.
