I was just thinking and I want to know something. Is a preson who does sambo hard to take down like a western wrestler and if a sambo expert can easily take down a western wrestler. I know it is somewhat difficult for a BJJ expert to take down a wrestler with no such backround. I think a Judo expert can take down a wresler without much trouble. I want to know what you guys think. I do BJJ and MT. I want to learn other styles as well. There is only so much you can take. I am going to take wester boxing for my second strike art. What would be good with BJJ. Sambo, wrestling or Judo.

You think a judo guy can take down a wrestler without much trouble... is this without a gi.. or with a gi... seeing as how you didnt mention that they would be wearing gi's I will assume without...
Are you kidding?... Jeez..
I know it depends on the person but really... Judo isnt better than wrestling and wrestling isnt better than Judo but its an untrue statement that you made.
In no gi though wrestling is far superior... if Matt hughes had fought Karo I could provide that as a definitive example.. but since they havent, Ill use GSP who is a wrestler.. who beat Karo...
No gi wrestling would kill...
Fedor is the only successful MMA sambo user I know, but he also knows a ton of Judo.. so that wouldnt really count...

I look at Yoshida when I talk about Judo. He seems to takedown some of the wrestlers he fought without too much trouble. I know that even he had trouble some times. So my guess is you pick wrestling from Judo and Sambo. Nice choice and I think I might pick it as well. I want to get more thoughts on this. I would have to agree that wrestling is better without GI but with a GI then it is not so. I would have to disagree on Sambo it is not as weak as you seem to make it. I think Andre Arlovski uses Sambo quite well don't you think?

For crying out loud nobody is putting anthing above anything else. However, if you are specifically looking to better yourself as a martial artist, Judo is generally more martially related. In wrestling you are always trying to pin, in Judo at least these are some submissions and striking. However, wrestling has very valid no-gi properties that can be applied not just to MMA but to actual combat. With a little tweeking of classic wrestling technique, the takedowns and contolling positions and general feel for the grappling game can be achieved and use in MMA or on the street.
Sambo combines plenty of other grappling arts allong with the countless traditional wrestling styles of old mother Russia. I like sambo stuff and I sure wsh I could get into it. It involves a lot of leg-lock stuff, and incorperated a whole lot of stuff into its system, when Judo traditionally has X number of throws, X number of grappling techniques, X number of strikes, ect... (not that one is intrinsically bette than the other)

Quite true. However as we can see by looking at modern grappling arts (influenced or descended directly from Judo) like the venerated BJJ/GJJ and Sambo, it becomes clear that the base techniques have many (MANY) variations in tactics, transition, position and application.
Anyone that makes an art their own can use the techniques in new or innovative ways. With or without a Gi. The training methods of these styles still owe a lot to Kano Sensei...

For the record you took my post to mean wrestling is better than Judo, and sambo is worse than both of them..
I dont think thats true, as I said they are just different...
In mma judo seems to be more effective in pride, and wrestling in UFC, this has alot to do with the cage in UFC, and lack there of in Pride.
Neither is better... I've done some wrestling, and I've done some Judo and I think I may do some more Judo to tell you the truth... I live in Canada and we wear coats and pants more often than shorts and t shirts..

Who took your post that way? Not me. It doesn't really matter to me what anyone thinks about some thing or some other thing...
Judo has a lot to offer a martial artist. Wrestling has something to offer and Sambo something else...
You will find elements of Judo in almost every other (modern) combat art on the planet.... wonder why?
Now I won't tell you Judo is better than wrestling because that depends on how much we enjoy it. But if you look at the modern grappling craze, really look, you will see a lot of good Judo. And wrestling!

Sambo would be a nice choice. The drills are quite nice. You will see a broad approach to the ground game. It will give you more options to play with. I was lucky enough to train for a short while with a sambo guy. I was impressed. Good drills and good counters. I might also add that if you already have a ground game your western boxing may improve your overall game better.
