  • GSP vs Penn Thread.

In light of the couture vs lidell, and hughes vs gracie thread...

    GSP vs Penn....

My vote is with GSP.. although I gotta bet from my Jiu Jitsu instructor says Penn wins... I've got a few reasons why I think GSP will win, and besides I want him too win.

    So lets hear your thoughts..

And please no blatant BJJ nuthugging like in the royce thread.. we all know penn has a blackbelt.

This is the Welter Era of GSP.His stand up is way beter then Penn's...he has explosive power....but GSP has sharper technique...more power and more speed..not to mention he is very explosive as well with the spinning back kick...flying knees and his excellent hand combos. In the clinch GSP has better wrestling then BJ...and hes alot stronger...BJ wouln't musscle GSP around like he did to gomi and ludwig. The ground is where Penn's ONLY advantage is....the thing is that he MUST be on TOP....if hes in guard against GSP he is not going to submit him...just get pounded on.For penn to win he has to take him down and get a good position and look for a finish....even if he dose have GSP down though the real question is can he keep him there....if he can its his fight.Im confident that it will be GSP all the way!!

Wrestling your giving to GSP?.. at first I did too, and im not sure if penn will be able to take him down because of the size difference.. but..

According to my jiu jitsu instructor, Tito Ortiz had said that penn was beating him in the wrestling game before anyone even knew who penn was...

so if Penn > Tito > Gsp...

You better recheck the original post, Penn isnt a black belt in BJJ, he is the first American to win a World Championship in BJJ in Brazil. He is one bad ass muther fucking black belt. He isnt a Vitor Belfort " I skipped brown and went from purple to black, black belt". There is a huge difference between a good black and a great black belt, as you guys may have seen in the gym before.
I gotto go with Penn in this fight. I love GSP, but he doesnt have the ground game to stay with Penn. But with the bullllshit 5 minute rounds, anything can happen, and I havent seen Penn in a while, but Ill still pick him to beat the purple belt GSP.

See this is what the whole "we know penn is a blackbelt" comment was for... honestly it was specifically for you.... Please... SHUT THE **** UP!

Please offer your opinion, but blatant bjj nuthugging is just fucking stupid... "hes a black and hes a purple therefore he owns him"... yeah dont look at the striking, or wrestling, or size advantage.. just the brazilian jiu jitsu because their fighting in gi's with no striking.

honestly I bet you attribute Chuck Lidell's latest victory over Randy because Chuck has a purple, and randy's just a wrestler... jebus...

Its not nuthugging moron, Penn isnt "just" a black belt, thats the point. If youve seen great black belts and regular black belts grapple, its like a white belt and a purple, no comparison. Penn has a DISTINCT ground advntage, one thats too big for GSP to overcome with his striking and other things that Penn is just as good at anyway.
I know how good BJJ black belts are, I will always pick a black belt in BJJ to win over someone who doesnt have a great ground game, why wouldnt I?
GSP wont submitt his, wont KO him, so what will he do?? GNP him? I doubt that he can hold Penn in a position long enough to GNP him.
Bottom line, I like GSP as fighter, he is one of my favorites, but look at it unbiastly, he cannot beat Penn

                  Penn has a full game.
The problem with most BJJ Phenoms is they are one dimensional.
Penn has legitimate standup skills. Knocks a lot of people out.
GSP might win a close decision if this were a pure boxing match.
He wont be able to train/concentrate on just takedown defense here,
I suspect BJ's gameplan will be to start standing and eventually
take him down when the opportunity presents itself..But he wont force it
like you see other guys doing when they want to go to the ground.

Guys get ground and pounded because their ground skills are sub par.
BJ is arguably the #1 BJJ fighter in MMA today. There is 0% chance
of him not winning the ground game in any shape way or form.

My problem with this fight, is that BJ already beat Hughes, and
both of Hughes' biggest challengers have to fight each other.
Kinda BS...GSP or Penn should be fighting Hughes. Ill laugh my
ass off if Gracie beats Hughes. The UFC really spoon feeds guys like
                  Hughes and Liddell.

Anyone can beat anyone on a given night..If GSP wins,
Ill be rooting for him to crush Hughes. Penn will be a top
MMA star within 2 years (a big a name as Hughes and Liddell).
I believe Penn is also the #1 ranked fighter by his peers in
                  his weight class.

It is nuthugging you give a bjj blackbelt the win just because he has a bjj blackbelt ... lemme ask you this.. would you pick Big Nog over fedor.... Big Nog's gotta bjj blackbelt.. in fact hes prolly got the best bjj game in all of mma (using it effectively in mma for subs and whatnot) and how many times has Fedor.. a judoka or sambo guy OWNED him....

GSP knows jiu jitsu too, and wrestling... GSP is more of a ground fighter than a standupfighter... watch his fight against Trigg, "this man is a wrestler and a jiu jitsu fighter"... hes got at least a purple belt, and your stance of "great blackbelts own blackbelts".... well that would mean great blackbelts own purple belts.. IN JIU JITSU... not when the guy is significantly larger than you and punching/elbowing your face in with no gi on.

Besides why is Penn a GREAT black belt.... what jiu jitsu competitions has he won, where has he dominated.. has he won the Abu Dhabi? He got it in 4 years.. that doesnt make him a great blackbelt, that makes him a guy whogot a blackbelt quickly.

So GSP's wrestling and purple belt give him a decent ground game, im not saying his is better than BJ's but its enough to neutralize BJ's and get back to his feet.

You said GSP cant KO penn... well ... lets look at this... BJ penn lost to Jens Pulver... a guy shorter than him.. and that fight was mostly standup, how do you think Penn is gonna do against a huge welterweight like GSP... besides who says Penn is better than GSP standing.

You hug the bjj blackbelt's nuts so tightly, arent u gonna be pissed when GSP mashes his face?

                      GSP over Penn

I agree with Samurai guy completely. In addition, GSP seems, to me, to have a higher level of conditioning than Penn's, and that could be a big factor in their upcoming match. I noticed that in GSP's match against Karo Parisyan (an olympic judoka, not bjj unfortunately). He was constantly able to muscle his way out of his Karo's submission attempts. Penn's submission techniques have to be extra sharp to submit a powerful fighter like GSP, or else Penn's will be taking shots everytime they go to the ground.

Yeah I just heard Penn looked real lethargic and out of shape in his last fight.
Hopefully he's not feeling "bored" this time around.

Yeah and I saw Big Nog totally OWN Crocop. You are so fucking stupid to compare GSP to a totally awesome KO power puching iron jawed bad ass guy like Fedor. GSP cannot beat a black belt, if it goes to the ground, he is finished, its a very easy call, but for a tard like yourself, it appears otherwise. My picks for MMA fights have been no worse that 30-2 on this site, I am always correct save 2 times. Now go back to cartoons and Chuck Norris movies there you Schmoe

I like the way GSP looked at Tiggs....But there is no doubt the Penn is going to be tough....Penn size could be a factor...GSP is a true 170....Either way its going to be a good fight....

If it goes to the ground....and hes on top.He dose not have what it takes to beat GSP from the bottom. If some people have selective memory....look at what he did to Sean Sherk...a guy who's takedowns are feared in the welter div...the man was only defeated by Hughes in a 5 round unamious dec....GSP annhilated sean standing and on the ground...not only easily stopping the takedowns but taking sherk down and pounding his skull in.If a gigantic takedown machine like Sherk cant even come close to taking GSP off his feet how is BJ ever going to....hes going to get KO'ED! WARRR GSPPPPP!!!!
