there have also been ancient heiroglyphics and whatnot found in egypt depicting certain fighting techniques of the time.

supposedly some elements of the fighting techniques of that region were added to the collective fighting styles that fall under the umbrella term of "jiu jitsu".

I bet you've paid a lot of money to be brainwashed by the Gracie propaganda...

Here's a tip: Don't pay twice, the money is no big deal but don't bet your LIFE on it!

Since mankind crawled out of the caves we've been using WEAPONS...

That's why we're the dominant species on the planet. Our best weapon is a brain, why don't you TRY to use yours?

Indeed. I think the emphasis on empty hand has developed as societies in the West are increasingly 'disarming' their law abiding civilians.

I personally think that firearms should carry concurrent life sentences and that we should be allowed to carry swords, of the fencing variety. There's no weight categories in fencing except those that apply to the sword itself.

Who invented MMA? Well I'm going to give some cudos to the Greeks too 'cause I'm led to believe that all the original Olypmic sports were military arts, long distance runners were used to convey information back to HQ, such as "we're getting our asses kicked, HELP!"

I think some people are having difficulty with the concept of Mixed MA's.

One MA that encompasses multiple types of handling a situation I.E. punching, kicking, or grappling is not a MMA if it all comes from the same system.

MMA implies that several systems of MA's are used to build a fighting "tool box". they still follow the principle of their original systems.

"MMA" is really a sport style of it's own...

Clearly the days of blending arts to create a hybred form have little meaning for today's "Ultimate" fighters....

Many systems come from a mix of other systems although they are complete systems - isn't hao quan a mixed martial art (taiji, bagua, xing yi).
