Was wrestling training redundant in Ancient Greece?

Another thing about the gladiators, thumbs up meant the guy dies, thumbs down means put the sword back in the sheath, the guy lives.....boy did hollywood **** that one up
That's right! The thumbs up was the signal for the gladiator to stab to the heart or throat. It wasn't really a thumbs up, but more of a thumb turned in the direction of one's own heart or throat. Fights were rarely to the death though.
And while we're on the subject, the gladiators were an invention of the Etruscans, not the Greeks.
The most brutal of all comp back in ancient Greece was Pankration. It was basically Anything goes except biting and eye gouging...in Sparta however even those were allowed. There is a legend about a warrior who was undefeated and won the olympic title.he fought a match in the olympics finals in i think the second or third comp. where he was getting rear naked choked and he was about to go out...the guy had his ankles crossed(which is why they tell you its a no no)and he threw his leg over and arched up breaking the guys ankle...the guy threw up his index finger(basically tapping out)and the match was awarded to the unbeaten warrior..but he died from the RNC and a statue was made for him in Greece for being such a tough SOB.
