  • Back to Basics

Do you guys find that the more and longer you train the more you figure out how important the basic stuff is? I mean with the availability of tapes specializing in about every position etc, the basics are what actually really work! Sometimes I think these moves get so complicated and rely so much on your opponent doing a specific movement that making them work at times seems impossible..

I think this is true for most people, myself included. Sure I pull off a calf crush or a wierd arm lock, but to be honest, the strait armbar is my baby, and the RNC is my other primary weapon.

Nobody can expect to rely mainly on crazy toe holds and eddie bravo's twister. Some moves just come up more than others, and while its awesome to be abel to throw some strange moves to use as confusing mix-ups or to use in strange positions that come up, the basics are the bread and butter. The armbar is a submission that is far more likely to come up than a banana split, and an RNC is essentially the most effective, common, and secure move in submission wrestling.

You can stil have style while sticking to the basics, but its always good to be versed in varied submissions to barrage the enemy and be able to deal with new body mechanics and expand you knowledge of grappling in general.

the way i look at it you can do athousand techniques on a mediocre level or stick to the old trusty armbar/kimura/mata-leao(insert fav here) i like to learn new subs but only if they are practicall i generally focus on defense and strategy in training i agree with the previous post style comes into play no matter what you do whetherits a basic key lock or helicopter armbar i just do what ever i can to the best of my ability test your self every time your feet hit the mat
