Google it. Its a modern sportive martial art which is also a competitive sport. It looks a lot like what you may know as "Ultimate Fighting" or "No holds barred competition."
Do your homework and decide what you want out of the martial arts, how you like to train, what you are interested in, ect....

Judo....Punch, grapple, throwdown, if you were a kick-boxer, all the better!
Thai elbows and knees are good too...
Do what you like, that way you will enjoy learning and get better at it faster.

Yeah really, don't just take up a martial art because we say so, figure out what you like, what is around you, what you are interested in, what role martial arts will play in your life, ect... If you want to be a NHB fighter than BJJ is a decent choice, as is Muay Thai, and a few other arts that are commonsly taught at "MMA" schools around America.

mixing anything with boxing is good. if you train in another striking art like mt, or wing chun it could take your striking and speed to a whole new level, but then again if you already know striking, supplementing it with grappling is always recommended.

training in Ireland
I would recommend the SBG in Harolds Cross or two kings if you are in Dublin.
Whether a complete beginner or seasoned martial artist, all are welcome at 'The Monster', a state of the art Mixed Martial Arts Gym less than 4 miles from Dublin City Centre. Known as the home of 2 division UFC Champion Conor McGregor, owner John Kavanagh was Ireland's first BJJ Black Belt and MMA competitor. Adults, Kids, and Ladies Only classes are available across a range of disciplines.
By far the best MMA clubs in Ireland.

I want a girl that spends more time on her back than Royce Gracie.
I'll knee you in the face like your name was Josh Koschek -- Me
Judo or wrestling, you can blast em with your hands from the boxing, and if they start to tangle you up you can put them down hard, then run away or kick them in the head.
If its for MMA, sprawl and brawl man, sprawl and brawl.

I think that free-moving, clinching, and ground-fighting is a good way to devide hand to hand combat. When you say "punching range" and "kicking range" you assume that certain attacks are your only options in certain distances.
Yeah, that's JKD talking.... The way I see it you're either in it or not. The idea of breaking things down is good academic stuff but to be honest there's only a fraction of a second between being out of range and then just crashing through kicking, punching and trapping range straight into grappling...

Actually thats Renzo Gracie's book, "Mastering Jujitsu" talking, but yeah the philosophies are similar.
I think that if you have no grip or real control on your opponent you are simply free-moving, because I don't like to think of certain ever-changing ranges to indicate certain attacks, I can kick from punching range, punch from knee range, ect...
When someone has a grip on me (underhook, front headlock, grip on my wrist) I consider this little phase the clinch.
Ground-fighting, wether it be striking from a dominant position or submitting or escaping or whatever, is ground fighting. This is when gravity and the ground cna be used to have maximum control over another person's body.
None of these classifications limit my attacks. For instance, when my opponent grabs my wrist I don't call this "Chin Na" range, because I may want to do some striking, some shooting, or some pummeling.
