  • Most powerfull punch?

Some of you may think this is a dumb topic like all those "4 da streetz" topics but go ahead and humor me. For those who don't want to read my short story below just skip ahead to the question.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was hangin out with some friends the other day and we were talking about martial arts a bit. Talking about punches.

I mentioned the hook being a nice punch. You get the fast whipping motion and power from pivoting your hips and leaning into it. Then this one guy chimes in and says "yeah, but the most powerful punch is a straight punch". This is a guy who has been doing some hardcore TMA Karate for the past year. So I'm pretty sure he was talking about the Karate "chambered" punch.

Then another guy, who has never done a day of any MA training in his life or read a single text on the subject, whole heartedly agrees with him.

I disagreed but didn't feel the need to get into an argument about it so I said nothing. But then I thought about it, and I don't really know what the most powerfull punch is.

If someone asked me to answer that question myself I'd guess it's the overhand right.

I'm posing this question in the MMA forum because I wanted opinions from various MA practitioners. Not just boxers (the striking MA I most subscribe to).

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So which punch is the most powerfull? (has the most potential for damage in a single hit). No consideration for location. Of course a strike to the neck has a lot of damage potential but I'm just talking about the type of punch.

Some people have a good jab, some people have a good hook, some people have a good straight. Some people have good punches in general, some people have powerful punches, some people have faster punches and the list goes on. This thing is as random as it can get, there is no "most powerful punch" imo, some people can pivot their hips better than others it's just very random.

I would say a cocked back strong hand (aka a haymaker). Its sloppy and easy to dodge but it is the most powerful. In streetfights you see a lot of guys cock back and throw it and its so easy to slip because your body tells exactly how the punch is coming.

The Phoenix eye fist single knuckle strike as used in Chuka Chuan Fa is the most powerful right because it puts all the power into a pinpoint impact innit.

I think a hook or haymaker would be strongest. Anything that gets your body and momentum behind it. A straight punch just isn't as effective, physically speaking. The bicep and shoulder aren't at their strongest when "pushing" out and you don't get as much torque out of your hips.

I agree that a haymaker is probably the most powerful in terms of force, since you've got the shoulder, bicep, tricep, shoulder, hips and abdomen muscles all working together with great efficiency. Since the fist is so far out with respect to the body, it has greater rotational acceleration.

Uppercuts are pretty easy to land, maybbe not with full force but i can get a few in on the inside. A combination of a hook and a uppercut would be powerful - if anyone understands what i mean lol

Strait punch is without a doubt the most powerful. Hooks and uppercuts are useful because they come in at wierd angles, and can catch opponents in the side of the head or right under their jaw, but in terms of sheer force are less powerful than the strait punch.

The straight right cross should be your most powerful punch if your orthodox(assuming you have good hip rotation, etc).

I guess the haymaker is just one of those with a longer wind up.. .but... yeah... straight right hand for sure....

The reason you thought the hook punch might be the most powerful is because in boxing, the left hook is seen as the "knockout punch" for most people... just because its a solid punch, with a lot of hips, you can get your weight into it, and it LANDS.

The straight right is your most powerful if it lands, but their are others that are more likely to land.

Thats where the guy talking about different people being good at different punches arguments come into play.
