I watched videos where different people have different opinions on this. One guy said that you should get real close to the grappler if he already wrapped his arms around your legs or waist and fall on purpose while simultaneously kicking him in the groin or abdomen. But does that really work in real life if the grappler is holding you real tight? Another guy said that if he initially tries to grab you, just back away and knee him or push his head away. What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?. If you decide to do this then make sure you get a good wrestler not some guy who wrestled for a while in high school 20 years ago. He will not be a good indication of how your takedown defense is improving.
It is never easy to stop a good wrestler from taking you down or closing the distance (unless you have unlimited space and good footwork).
Trying to kick him in the groin will not work as he will be controlling your upper body so that if you move your legs (and lose balance) he will throw you HARD. Alternatively he will be controlling your one or both of your legs so you will not be able to kick.
Trianglechokes comments were very valid. A good sprawl, blocking his upperbody with your forearms (using a neck tie) and getting underhooks are a good starting point.
I know this post sounds biased but I am not a wrestler. I am primarily a standup fighter with about four years of BJJ. I started training in MMA about a year ago which includes Greco-Roman and it has filled in what was a huge hole in my game.

3 methods but your timing has to be on the money.
1) Underhook and sprawl ( Sprawl means spread your legs and fall on your enemy making him carry your body weight) This was already said but I added to it.
2) a quick knee to the face ( ala ken shamrock ko'ing Kimo)
3.) block his shoulders with your hand and jump back or block his shoulders and go into the guillotine lock.
There are others also but will depend on the nature of the two combatants.

I choke people, I dont poke people. -- Me
Were you born to resist or be abused? I swear I'll never give in, I refuse. -- Foo Fighters
I want a girl that spends more time on her back than Royce Gracie.
I'll knee you in the face like your name was Josh Koschek -- Me
Three words...
Flying Triangle Choke....
All day baby, all day.....
Lol Seriously though, your gonna need to sprawl out and throw knees, or hammerfists, or elbows to the back of the head (knees for MMA, or streetfighting).
Sprawl is pretty simple to learn and train, and its your best bet...

To defend shoot, NEVER KNEE unless you sprawled out already. If youre a good striker and a shit grappler but dont KO the guy with a knee and you go down, youre getting tapped. Best thing, push off and circle then continue stand up. If you watch CroCop or Liddell, theyll sprawl or do that. Other then that, its dangerous if youre with a good grappler.
