  • The Guard... what do you do from it?

I know the guard is supposed to be a relatively strong position to pull, but I never feel real confident when I'm using it. Any of you with strong guard games have tips? I know a couple armbars from the guard as well as sankaku. It just crossed my mind after my last class to try an ezekiel (side note, anyone know the proper Japanese name for the ezekiel choke?) while I have someone in my guard.
What are all of your favorite techniques from the guard. How about ways to roll it over into mount?

    Shime waza!

What's with the screen name if you do GJJ? I thought you were a Judoka? LOL Oh well... My bad.

Ezekiel choke is a variation of Sode Guruma Jime or just Sode Jime..

Aka "paper cutter choke" works better from the mount.

I personally like the triangle the best from the guard.

Oh, no, I am indeed a Judoka. I just posted in BJJ forum cause I thought I'd get the most replies here. Is that what threw you off? We've been throwing in a few more newaza oriented classes lately so that's why I'm wondering.
And yea, I've only ever used that choke from the mount but I was just pondering if you could control the neck with both hands, pull him in low, maybe hike the legs up higher on his back, then apply it quick.
Anywho, thanks for the reply as always Tant

Yea I like sankaku too, especially because it's also an easy transition to an armbar.

The important thing to remember with the guard is that it is not a static position. You don't just lock your legs around the guy and hold on. You have to be actively attacking your opponent's base. If you allow your opponent to stabilize his base, he will pass.

            Sweeps:

My personal favourites are open guard sweeps when your opponent stands to pass. I couldn't find any illustrated techniques though.

            Armlocks:

            Take the Back:

Combination chain: pressing armlock to armbar to omoplata to sweep; climb-up armbar to key-lock to omoplata

A good source for some great articles on BJJ is here : http://royharris.com . You have to register to read them, but it's free. His explanations of techniques are very clear and precise.

Here's an example of a sweep when the opponent stands to pass:

Well if the Gracie's themselves haven't been at it long enough to be "invincible" on the ground then I don't want to spend that kind of time getting there . The ground work of BJJ isn't superior than the ground work of Judo.
And no disrespect to BJJ players. There are a few of them in my Judo class and I learn plenty from them about newaza. BJJ just isn't for me though, I would feel like a boxer who only trained to hit with one hand.

then why are asking people what to do from guard? Why dont you ask your Judo instructor?

                        ....

If he asked about techniques from dojime, choza or ashigarami would you know what he was asking? Do you know what those names refer to? I'll tell you... OPEN GUARD? Half guard? Closed guard? Do you have any idea which one is which smart guy?

The techniques in BJJ/GJJ came from Kodokan Judo....

Because it's a common position to end up in while doing newaza. This position is not an invention of Helio Gracie's. I'm sure there's a Japanese name for the guard, I just don't happen to know it. I'm asking here because I'm sure the average BJJ player spends more time using the guard than the average Judoka.

lol, took 2 minutes too long answering. I should have just left it to you in the first place.

A dojime is a body triangle that you do from a closed guard and a ashigarami is a armlock from a side mount.
And the Gracie's emphasize all ground work that was from Kano's Judo and the Gracies have modified it along the way, or so were made to believe...

I took an extra minute coming up with a defense for the Gracie's innovation.
