The clip with Sakuraba shows what can happen when you have an exceptional fighter, such as Sakuraba, who is versed in BJJ counters against a Gracie.

It's hard to tell from the quality of the clip, but Royce must have been really messed up for his corner to throw in the towel. Considering he was matched against a wrestler, I was surprised that Royce wasn't actually defeated by a counter submission, or a choke, but rather the cumulative effect of kicks and punches over the span of several rounds.

To his credit, he fought like a tiger throughout the match, but it also appears that he absorbed a number of heavy punches as well.

i think one of those low kicks broke ryoce's leg, and thats why they threw in the towl.

Shouldn't have worn it. Sakuraba took full advantage of royce's gi and used it agaisnt him.

It may have been but clearly this one worked agaisnt him. Come to think of it, I think he wears the Gi more out of respect for tradition than a "game plan" unless he intends to choke them out with a belt.

Not to mention, dare I say it, but striking did more damage than grappling.

No way, dude…homie don’t play that. It will turn into a psychological break down of you’re posts. Inevitably, this will lead to the same process with Boar (your arch enemy and evil counter part ). This may even lead to the two of you understanding each other…..where’s the fun in that

Whatever Sakuraba was doing, it worked. Royce was not able to hold him down long enough to either choke him out, or submit him with an armbar, or anything else that's part of his toolbox.

For his part, Sakuraba wasn't able to choke Royce out or apply an armbar either. The difference came down to who to beat the #$%@ out of the other guy, and in this case, Sakuraba was the better man.
