  • Ground n Pound

Do any of you actually use some type of technique when punching from the mount or within the guard? Combinations or moves that you have found open up a particulary good defense?

I am trying to see if there any point to drilling striking from the mount or inside the guard or if you are just as well off just flailing away!

Thanks for your opinions in advance.

I think its something good to train. Soemthing we do with macho headgear and gloves is mount and pound the guy. Both guys get something out of it. I have used some "traditional" trapping here. Also I like to do the same as edro said, but make it look like a hook, and then curve it around into a straight.

I love to practice this.Especially from the bottom. You can slide to one side ,take an under hook and umpa the guy who has you mounted. He will go forward and usually post an arm out.Now proceed to upper cut his face off.Sometimes he posts an arm and puts his head to the ground too.Thats even better cause his head has no where to recoil when you start drilling him. Also You get to use your elbows and knuckles to block with while on the ground.Destroy the offending appendige. Then when he sits up to get more of a throw, umpa and grab his hip to throw him forward and over.Have someone put on some gloves and you start on your knees and cant stand. He can only punch. Now he is to try his best to take your head off and you have to get him to the ground and in a control position.OBOY,we are having fun now.

If you have the mount and just start flailing you WILL get rolled. From the mount I'll often lay on the guy's face and extend one arm away from my body WITHOUT PUTTING MY WEIGHT ON IT. Then pop my body up and bring my arm back in and pop him one, the go straight back to laying on his face. Then pop up again and try a straight shot to the face. Or you can sit up and throw hooking punches, but not to actually score a punch. If he's covering his face you use the hook to sweep his arms out of the way, then follow up with an elbow to exploit the opening.

From the gaurd, put your feet on the guys hips the control the distance, put on hand on the back of his head and with the other arm ELBOW ELBOW ELBOW. I don't know if you saw Rutten vs. Randleman but I loved seeing Randleman's hair turn from blond to a bloody brown-red after being elbowed from Rutten's gaurd.
