  • ATTN Grapple Girl ~ Self Defense

Hi, we were having a discussion on another forum, and I was wondering your take on self defense. I visited your web site, and give you your props, great job fighting.

If you would, what are your takes on self-defense tactics/rape prevention, etc. As far as the physical side goes, my attention isn't on the psychological/awareness side for this particular question to you.

I ask you because you are a women and you also train very hard for MMA fights.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Chad I hope I do not offend you but I have some opinions on womens self defense you might not agree on. #1 I dont like women taking a self defense weekend seminar I think all these seminars do for one is line the pocket of the instructor giving it and give the woman a false sence of security!! lets face it being able to defend yourself takes time to learn!!! you cant learn to fight in a weekend or from watching some video. #2 I dont like men teaching self defense to women. A man has no idea how a woman is going to react in any given situation. Plus I have seen men be too soft on women in training just because she is a woman she is given a little slack!!! that dont cut it with me. I dont care if a woman crys or gives me the puppy dog sad eyes!!I think women need to train right along the side of men and train with them, all my sparring partners are men!! If you would like my opinions on what arts are best for women to train for self defense I say Kick boxing and Jiu-Jitsu!!! the only reason I say Jiu-Jitsu is because it gets women use to dealing with mens strength, not that I would ever want to see a woman grapple a man for self defense but if she had too at least she would be familiar with it. I hope I may have answered some of your questions if you have anything else just ask I would be more than happy to answer them if I could.

That is some helpful insight GrappleGirl. I was thinking of putting my wife through the Rorion's G.R.A.P.L.E. program for women but maybe I would be better off just getting her to work out with me in the garage?

sccr-- This was just my opinion on womens self defense!! You need to do what you and her feel are the best way for her to train and learn how to defend herself. The only thing wrong with you showing her stuff in the garage is your going to be too nice to her. In my opinion you have to get roughed up some. She needs to work out with different people preferable guys like your friends when you work out. Her working out with your friends that you can trust not to hurt her will be good for her. She has to get roughed up not "HURT" this will take her pain tollerance to a higher level and make her stronger. Good luck

                  Michelle,

Actually, I agree with you 100%. The original discussion started with me stating that the guard could be a viable option for a women(hell, anyone) to learn in a rape self defense situation which the topic was about. Logic being that he wants to get between the legs, and once he is there, knowledge of the guard(triangle or arm bar to snap the elbow maybe) could be very useful while he post his hand and reaches down with the other to undo his pants. Of course, I don't think a woman would even want to go there, and theres all this awareness, etc., etc., but I feel exactly as you do. I don't think a seminar will teach self defense and a woman(or anyone) that wants to learn self defense should train hard.

Also to mention the psycholigical game that a woman could talk to get the man into certain positions. "Here, put this leg on your shoulder...here, touch my left breast with my left hand, etc."

I agree with you 100%, I feel that if some of these self defense instructors can teach "women" techniques effective enough to defend herself in a weekend seminar, then hell, why ain't it good for the rest of us??? I have to train my ass off hard everyday and wake up soar every morning. I do see though, how a seminar can be recorded and given to the individuals with some training methods and ideas on the tape so that the individuals can go home and work out.

I try and keep a realistic outlook on what is practical and what is not. I teach women sometimes and find it very difficult! Most women just do not have the strength or the level of intensity that I like them to train with. I agree with you that women could probally talk men into these situations that you mentioned!! and videos could come in handy maybe I am not a fan of videos myself. I believe in lots and lots of sparring!!!I am going to be realistic here. This is not bragging and I do not want it to come across this way. I am a very highly skilled woman and I am way above average in strength for my size I weigh 135lb!! Even at my level I am not going to beat some guy that weighs 200lbs down to the ground in a street fight. I may be able to defend myself for a few minutes against a big powerful guy but in the end he is probably going to win. But this can be guarranteed I am going to get my shots in!!

Well let me know when you get to Hawaii...I weigh 200 lbs.

The idea that I had for the seminar video was to record the actual seminar so that they could take the video home with them and have something to look at to make sure that they train it correctly. I do think that would be better than just going to a sem and going home with a false sense of security. Of course, if they don't train it, than they waste their time and money.

Anyway, thanks for your POV. Much appreciated.

sccr06, what is the difference between the classes? Is his G.R.A.P.L.E. program for women different in the sense that it teaches biting, gouges?

Do they have different agendas? Or is ist just women rolling with women? If its the second, I think she should roll with the guys, that is most likely the type of attacker she would deal with...(hopefully not).

I will never teach a woman.I have had too many women complain about being treated rough even when I was being soft.I have had women complain about where you touch them when grappling. They bury their arms in and think you shouldnt be reaching in cause you might touch something.
                          It just isnt worth it.
I have only wrestled with one girl who had the right attitude. She didnt care if she got touched anywhere. She was there to grapple and that was all. When I asked her why she didnt seem to care about grappling with boy's,she said(I dont have time to worry about that.I'm too busy trying to kick some arse). She didnt like you going easy on her either.

Cool, is she the girl on the SBG vids? One of the new guys training wants his girlfriend to roll with us, its the first time I will do so, I'm not sure what to expect, I just want to train and don't want to deal with any BS. I will always give it my all to tap whoever I am roling with, unless previously agreed otherwise.

Chad- I don't know the extent of the differences between regular classes and G.R.A.P.L.E. since I don't train at Torrance. I just saw that he was advertising that program saying it was designed for female defense. I think it stands for Gracie Rape Avoidance somethingorother...

Since I know the Gracies are not exactly pushovers I thought it might be a good idea.
