I've seen every single one of Royces professional MMA fights (except his most recent with Matt Hughes), and was watching the UFC before most people even knew of it's existence... Early MMA was nothing more than a cheap tough-man contest, it was pretty sad actually.

Put a real fighter like Tyson in there back in those days and he'd be dominant... Nowadays theres a little more class at the high-end, but at the lower levels of MMA (KOTC and other smaller shows) we still have fighters who would be hard-pressed to win a barfight.

Clinching in boxing - ummm... Earbiting?

Let's stick to the facts, and not make this a 'yes he is, no he isn't' type thread, please girls...
I'm sorry but it's four ranges... any book I've read or instructor I've talked to has agreed 4.

Long-kicking, Med- puching, some kicks, Close/clinch-punches,throws,takedowns,elbows,knees, Ground.... you know lol. Sorry, that's just how it is.

how it is the same as on the ground... the whole dynamic is different, which is why it's a seperate range of fighting.

Tyson would dominate the clinch on most guys... I've never been trained in elbows... but when I throw them(very very very similar to a hook) with my MT budys... I throw them just as well as them, and that's with limited boxing knowledge. I can't imagine an elbow from Tyson...

The whole earbiting... he's an animal, did that outside his prime... and doesnt represent the skill in the clinch of most boxers... so I have to ask... relevance?

We are sticking to the facts... you're the one taking away a range of fighting and calling boxing clinchin earbiting .

        Tyson would whip yo ass

I think modern sport boxing is incomplete, but someone like a young Tyson could have used it alone to beat just about anyone you put him against. Could a dominant grappler beat him back then? I'd say yes BUT only if Tyson used sport boxing. If Tyson trained a little wrestling and a little ground, then Tyson could have cleaned house. Boxing is becoming one of the most important skills in MMA. A good sprawl, a little Grecco-Roman, and a little BJJ added to pro-level boxer would create a helluva MMA competitor. If that boxer were Tyson, then it could be lethal--literally. None of us can imagine the power of the young Tyson's punches and his slipery foot work. The world has rarely seen anything like it--he was the prototype boxer--especially on the inside. THe clinch game? Forget about it.

                  tyson

with all due respect to the mma and bjj guys, but if we took a 21 year old mike tyson and bring him up against any of the top UFC, K1 etc guys today i think he would win hands down. I've seen a lot of his old documentaries and his ability to pick up and master things taught him was extraordinary, and I have no doubt he would've been studying grappling and have picked it up quite quickly. I've seen all the fights from the mma guys mentioned in this forum, and though they are tough, the killer instinct, and the raw talent that tyson had in his prime is incomparable. i don't know what chuck liddel makes per fight but it's definitely not 30mm$ that tyson was making, so tyson had no incentive to ever even look at UFC because he was making shitloads more boxing alone. take all these russian, french, dutch, brazillian and american mma guys, and i can't see one that is as impressive as tyson as a pure fighter, and believe me if tyson was in his prime now and he knew he could make a big name for himself switching to mma, he would find the best coaches from the best mma schools around the world and have mastered all he needed to dominate this game. again i knew the mma guys on this forum are going to shoot me down for saying this, and yes i have not fought professionally myself, but I have studied and observed and participated in every fight system i can get my hand on for the last 12 years. i chose to become a trader on wall street and make my money there rather than get pounded to death trying to make a living, but i still love fighting. i'm not american, i'm canadian but one thing i'll say about tyson is that he in his prime represented what i love about america - a poor kid with nothing who got a chance, worked his ass off, had the killer instinct and became the best of the best. with all due respect to everyone on this forum, i don't see that eye of the tiger in most of the mma guys today (or at least not to his extent). that's why i think he would've mastered BJJ, wrestling, kickboxing or whatever to become the best fighter of any type - UFC, k1, boxing etc etc. it's a trajedy that the kid had some demons that brought him down, but i think he is the purest and most impressive fighter of any type i've ever seen.

ok now you guys can shoot me down for my comments.

                  cheers
