I think the rule of thumb I try to go by is what I used when learning wilderness survival. "What's gonna kill you first?" If I risk escalating to avoid getting choked and passing out (and who knows what'll happen in those few seconds--or worse if they keep the choke on longer) then it's a good risk to take. They were correct, I think, in pointing out that it would in fact escalate...
Ill diss whoever i feel like dissing thank you very much and hey if someone broke my pinkey id choke the hell out if him harder.Like i said before if your getting choked and you TRY the escape but you CANT Bite the shit out of him...if anything it will loosen the choke for a split second...enough for you to do the escape and turn into him....if you cant reverse him and then bite him and still cant escape then you are screwed either way...
I'll just have to try it out on the street to see what happens. I'll have my friends give some bum $20 to choke me, and then break his pinky and see if he lets go or chokes harder. Paramedics on standby.

"Some bum" probably isn't trained to apply the technique. Stomp his foot, throw him with a hip throw, shrug your shoulders and tuck your chin while you reach behind and crush his nuts... Lots of things to do against hadaka jime... I like to bend forward and lower the base a bit to start, gives you some room to turn or get good position for O Goshi Keep his arm in your hands after he hits the deck for something painful like wakigatami or Jujigatami

your better off trying for something a little more substantial than the pinky. Breaking the index and middle fingers could substantially reduce his ability to to grab and hold,
First of all, I know you said they have their arm locked around their chin, but... once they get your back/grab, tuck your chin, And protect the neck with your hands too (neck/jaw I suppose).
They will have to peal your arms off if you have your hands up there, and that gives you some time to escape.
I'd also like to add are you aware of how to break peoples feet when they take the back and do not sink the hooks, but use another form of control? If your not, this is an essential thing to know, especially when facing untrained people (you said you trained for a street, people know how to do a "sleeper", but I think knowledge of working the hooks is a bit rarer).
Also if your standing, theres the rolling kneebar, or several throws you can do.
The sweeps are good, but be very, very careful if he has it locked in, because if so you could end up with a broken neck or some other bad injury. Alternatives to sweeping and for just general escape purposes:
If you are on your front and he is on your back your only real option is to pull his arm down.
If he has rolled you and he is on his back and you are on top of him, hold his arm and try flipping him, although it might not release the hold, for a few seconds it might throw him off balance and loosen it and give you oppertunity to tap.
If it is standing or kneeling you want to pull down and turn as hard as possible away from them.
Failing these three I would tap, because they are either going to break your jaw or apply a neck crank. Either way, you will struggle to breathe out of your mouth and probably get weak quickly.
