  • Wacky White Belt Moments

Earlier today, I was thinkin' about all the funny stuff that's happened in BJJ class. I remember one time, there was this cocky new guy and right away we didn't like each other. When we rolled, things were cool at first, then he started spazzin' out. I got pissed, and decided to mess with him. He managed to get back mount on me, but when he tried RNC, I wrist locked him and tapped him out. Another time, a new white belt got in my guard. He tried a pass, but was off-balance. I slapped his forehead, knocked him flat on his back, and took mount.
When I first started training, I did some silly things. At the end of my first class, I rolled with my instructor. Right away I tackled him to the floor and bear hugged him over both his arms as hard as I could. He laid there calmly explaining that what I was doing would backfire as soon as I got tired. I didn't believe him and kept squeezing. I got tired. He proceeded to tap me three times in 1 and a half minutes!
So, guys, what's the funniest way you ever tapped a white belt? What was the goofiest takedown or transition move you ever pulled off?

this one time i was rolling with another white belt, and i had him side control, and i was starting to roll him over to take his back and as i was doing that he kept trying to loop his undone belt around my neck lol. it didnt work, i pulled it away from him and tossed it aside.

      Good stuff...

Is it legal to use your belt to choke someone in a tournament?

Lol, funny you should ask, Freak. I remember one time, as a novice, I got tackled down by my big friend and he got my back, but my legs were crossed on his torso. Try to mentally imagine that. It looked like he was doggy-styling me. What kind of position is that? He's in my guard, but he has my back....lol.

          DoggyBackGuardMount, maybe?

Tryin' to understand this. Couldn't you reach this same position by twisting your torso over while in the guard so that you're pretty much facing down, but leaving your legs mostly in place? Your ankles weren't also crossed somewhere behind his back, were they? Anywho, it sounds painful.

No, it's not legal to use your belt to choke someone in a tournament.

I don't remember any particular spaz white belt moments from BJJ, but I do remember when my sister was a karate white belt and learnt the scissor takedown. She tried it on me, and didn't realise that with her flexibility, she'd get the top leg up over my neck/shoulder, so when she did the takedown, I flipped upside down and landed on my head. And I got concussion.

A kanibasami gone bad, eh? That sounds even more painful for the recipient. I was never too interested in learning that takedown for BJJ; it seems like the end result would be a mild positional gobbledegook (if yer lucky.) Sorta like playing Twister, except that in Twister, you don't immediately scramble for heel hooks.

The position you guys are describing (back mount with legs wrapped aorund THEIR torso), is the inverted gaurd.

                  Inverted Guard

This brings us to a fun way to pass a white belt's guard. Throw your leg strongly over to flip 'em on their stomach while they still have closed guard. As their guard breaks open, pick a side and do a straight ankle lock while arching back and applying a mild Boston Crab-like spine crank using your weight. I've done it a couple times, you shoulda seen the look on their face!

It is not illegal to use your belt to choke someone but you can't take off your belt to do so. Introducing...the hitman choke!

I had a guy from New Jersey wander into class one day. We set to rolling, eventually it happened that I escaped his guard and started to stack him up.

With my shoulders in the back of his knees and pressing forward, he suddenly says "tap, tap, you gotta tap there!" So I tapped (not knowing what the problem was) and backed out to see if something was wrong. Then he explained that in his school, if someone has his thighs over your shoulders, you have to tap out because he could squeeze and "break your neck".

Since then we've referred to it as 'The Jersey choke'

Hmmm. I bet a legal version of a belt choke would be possible from top north-south position. Gonna try it sometime. As for New Jersey, sounds like that school is deathly afraid of a lawsuit-- what a buncha pussies. Nothin' good ever came outta New Jersey. Anybody not believe me? C'mon!!! Even the Bloodhound Gang refuses to go there!

When me & my training partner were white belts, we went to train in LA for the first time. We would learn the techniques in class, then go back to one of our hotel rooms to video them. The best way to do this was to place the camcorder on top of the TV, and record the techniques on the bed.

Well the curtains were open, and a couple of girls passed by the window just as one of us was starting a techniqie from the backmount. To say they gave us a funny look is a bit of an understatement...

That's funny. The same thing happened to me, except that it wasn't from doing BJJ. I have a weight set and bench in my room, and live in an apt. A buddy o' mine likes to come over to lift weights. One day we both wanted to train our calves, but given my lack of proper equipment, the only way was to do donkey calf raises. People outside my window for sure thought we were gay.
