Lets face it guys, we love to fight and win on the mat but you cant tell me that your ultimate desire isn’t to be able to defend yourself on the street against anything that someone can throw at you. In my opinion BJJ was far too “sport” oriented to be of much value in a realistic situation. Sure I could add striking to my training, take some boxing, some Muay Thai, etc. like many BJJ guys tend to do but there are only so many hours in a day/days in a week/etc…I have this thing called a life and I don’t have time to be in the gym all day every day so basically what I would end up with is mediocre skills in a variety of disciplines.

What I’ve started studying is Modern Defendo CQB and I have never seen anything like it. My instructors teach us to always assume that our assailant is armed and not alone and that we should avoid physical conflict at all costs, However when forced to defend ourselves we attack with explosive, viciousness and ferocity, taking out eyes, throat, groin, breaking fingers, toes, etc. We train to fight exhausted, against multiple attackers in every imaginable situation, mimicking blind attacks, attacks with weapons, fighting injured, etc…we train to subdue and disable with lightning quick speed and then to get out quickly. They teach us that our best defense is awareness and intuition and that 95% of conflicts can be avoided if we choose. And I absolutely love the fact that there is a total lack of the ego and machismo that I’ve experienced in other MMA clubs…and in mma forums.

I highly recommend checking it out.
Thats the funniest post ive read in a long time. Clearly you have a lot to learn.

    Tell me this:

Can you practice poking someones eye out, gouging throat, hitting groin? Teaching you to 'avoid a fight at all costs' is not martial arts, martial arts is to prepare you for a situation in which you must defend yourself. That sounds more like psychiatry then martial arts to me.

      • Avoiding street fights and descalation techniques should always be taught.

Cobra Kai is not a good example of martial arts. You should be able to recognize a situation if time allows and defuse it if possible. You must also understand when a situation has gone beyond talking and moved into the realm of SD.

Being able to avoid a fight in the street should be trained as much as fighting. Awareness training is valuable to avoiding confrontations. Sometimes these things can't be avoided some times they can. A well rounded person should be able to handle both types of situations.

          • Why are you people keeping this childish troll thread alive? I admitted on the second page that I was only trying to ruffle your feathers (BJJ worshipers make it so easy to do)...and I admitted that I have a great respect for BJJ, in fact it's the basis of our ground work in Modern Defendo CQB (I just don't worship it like a blind fool)...but you tools just cant stop with your blow hard, know-it-all comments...you're all MMA geniuses aren't you! You know everything and nobody can tell you any different or teach you anything! LOL! That's what makes you so fun to tease...you think that your tiny little narrow view of the world is the end all-be all. Well let me tell you something, you take yourselves waaaay to seriously

Congratulations on writing a smash hit thread!!! Not many threads around here make it past 2,000 views. You are in the 4 thousands. Congrats, I'll bet you never write another one this poplular. The most I've seen is 35 k in the quotes for martial artist to live by! The most I've ever had was in 5k range which was medival knight vs samauri now residing in the open access forumn. Congrats, you should be proud. LOL
