muay thai. if you train in boxing you wont learn muay thai, but if you train in muay thai you will learn how to box as well. boxing is a part of muay thai. muay thai also has way more options as just pure boxing.

i always though muay thai had differences from boxing. the punches are done differently, atleast thats what i remmember about traditional mt. i'd suggest you cross train in the two, and get the best of both. but as emptyness said, if you had to pick one, go with mt. it's more complete in a striking point of view.

boxing is indeed a part of muay thai, but its not as fine tuned as str8 boxing unless you train at a place that teaches you both, which many places now do.

          *cough* take both *cough*

Take MT for a while, then switch over to boxing, then switch back. And spar spar spar.

thanks for the suggestions i went to the mauy thai class yesterday i have no stand up at all i love to grapple so this was my first class in striking there were about 13 people there with one teacher and a fighter to help out since it was my first class the fighter that was helping the class took me on the side to learn the stance and the stance was very confusing he worked on the stance and had me do a jab and a cross this was my first time hitting the bag 15 minutes after they paired everyone i got paired with someone who has been doing the mauy thai class for a year we had to do drill's where we had to block a punch and counter with an elbow to the face and we blocked the elbow with our arms i was very confused i did not learn the stance well enough and i do not even know how to kick i am used to learning 1 movement or stance at a time and keep drilling it until i can perform it flawlesly like in bjj when you are learning an escape or sweep you keep doing it until you have it down is mauy thai taught like the way my class was because it was like the opposite of bjj in the mauy thai class was alot of punching, kicking, knee, and elbow drills to the heavy bag and then lots of push ups running around in the mat and cardio/strength exercise does this class seem like the right way to learn mauy thai i can always switch to boxing eventually i want to compete i know i need stand up my freinds that fight at the gym said mauy thai is alot more devestating because of the kicks, knees, and elbows need help what do you guys think

yeah that sounds about right. muay thai is alot of repetition and alot of working out and exercise to get stronger, faster, tougher, etc....

you need to get used to using all your different body parts as weapons, so mixing it up is good.

NO! You will learn a CERTAIN way of punching... but not boxing. It's kinda like saying karate guys are grapplers.... well don't they have some wrist locks... and some takedowns?

Uh, the punches in Muay Thai are pretty much IDENTICAL to those used in boxing. The way they choose to use them may be different to account for the risk of knees, kicks, and elbows, but you'll still be getting the basics.

yup, muay thai punches contain the same punches as boxing, though they are somewhat crude compared to a boxer but thats because boxers spend 100 percent of their time boxing while kickboxers may only spend 25-50 percent of training on boxing so naturally boxers will have punches that are more fine tuned. and yes they are used a bit differently as well due to other risks posed by knees, elbows, kicks, and clinching.

bigred's right... Not so in Muay Chaiya or Muay Boran, though. The old muay boran fighters look like Thai Yankee Sulivans.

I don't need to train in it to know(though I will be training in it very soon)... punching is only a tool in muay thai, I've seen many pro fights where only 10-20 punches were thrown... some guys rely on punching very little, and I'm sure train other areas harder. I'm sure there are good punchers out there, but I stand by my statement.
