Kid Peligro Jiu Jitsu News . . .

Big Surprises at the Niteroi Cup:

The biggest news of the tournament was the presence of Rorion Gracie's son Riron. Riron, who has been in Brazil for a few weeks training with his grandfather, Professor Helio, is currently a purple belt. Professor decided to take his grandson to the tournament in order to test him. Because they wanted him to have the longest possible time for his matches (Black Belt fights are 10 min. while Purple Belt Matches are 7 min.), Professor had Riron compete in the Black Belt heavyweight division. The 92 Kg Riron submitted his first opponent with a choke from the mounted position and then had to face a rested Aureliao (125Kg). Aureliao, the runner up in the 2000 Worlds Over Division and a great judoka, took Riron down twice and got to across the side position after passing Riron's guard. Riron was able to put Aureliao back in the half guard, from there Riron did a beautiful reversal, got a technical mount (wasn't awarded the points in error). He then took the back (without hooks) and spent the last 4 minutes of the match attacking Aureliao's neck. Riron lost by points but everyone present were duly impressed with the kids performance.

After the match Riron gave back his Black Belt to his grandfather and took back his purple belt. Professor Helio stated that he was pleased with the kid's performance especially because they don't train for regular sport competition and do not care for points, therefore aren't up on the latest rules. Congratulations to Riron for his great showing and to all the other competitors.

Excellent article. More proof that this new generation of Gracies are going to be a force in both MMA and BJJ.

Just more proof that pure Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under Helio is extremely effective. I have recently heard some people on this forum say that Helio Gracie Jiu-jitsu is old jiujitsu. Oh, I forget, it's been so so so long since Royce proved its effectiveness in NHB (7 years). I find that to be ridiculous. If that is the mentality of today's Martial Artist then we will constantly be looking for the new flavor of the month. Folks, its just a matter of perception. Just because you typically don't see Gracie Jiu-jitsu fighter under Helio competing in point tournaments does not mean that they can't clean house if they prepare for those kind of rules. You see, Helio has preferred to keep his teachings more oriented for the street and not relying so much on all of the new moves seen today that rely almost entirely on sport rules and a Gi to be executed. Ryron is proof positive that pure technical jiu-jitsu taught with a specific teaching methodology like Helio's will at least 7 out of 10 times be able to counter the many watered down, rushed, sport versions of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu out there being taught by people who suddenly decided to strap on a black belt because Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was being considered the system of the 90's.

I'm really glad to hear this. That kid is something else.
With his size, strength, & technique he certainly can go all the way and I look for him to.

I remember not long ago when the dude was just a small kid and I probably could have taken him, but now there is NO Way.

                HAWK,

i'm glad you remarked. i'd be pleased to hear your assessment of ryron's skills and potential in nhb or sport jj.

heck the last (and only) time i rolled with him was about 5 years ago, he must have been about 14 or so. anyway, i could sense his potential at that time.

                thoughts?

                  Hey Karl,
How's it going? Are you going to come with Howard to the Pan-Am this year? If so, I'll see you there. As to Ryron, I feel he has a chance to really be awesome in NHB, traditional tournament JJ, & NTL tournament JJ. He's 19, weighing over 200, and his technique is awesome. He's 6'4"
tall so 200 is thin. I look for him to hit 220-230 before its over. Helio is spending a lot of time with him along with the guys at Humantia so he's got it all going for him. He's got size, heart, technique and patience. He's gonna make some big waves. I look for Rener, whose the same height as Ryron, to be right behind him.

Why is he still a purple belt if he can be competitive with black belts? At least a brown would sound right. Reminds me of my high school tennis coach, who would have the second best single's player on the team enter into the 4th Single's competition at each meet just so he could waste his opponents and be a definite score for the team.

i'm sorry i guess i'm just the only one who isn't real impressed with ryron. he lost in the 2nd round of a small tournament. big deal!! if it was the mundials i'd be impressed but i'm not. this is a kid who has grown up doing BJJ and who has some of the best grapplers in the world as uncles. for all that, he better be good. but my question is; if torrance is such a great school and rorian is such a great teacher, how come they've never produced anyone on a world level in either MMA or BJJ comps.

well, yeah he lost in the 2nd round by POINTS, but… he’s a purple who fought in the black belt category against a guy who weighed 125 kilos! You still can’t cut him any slack?!?!?! sheesh.

he fought in the heavy wieght division as a heavywieght, so don't use wieght as an excuse. how many of those other guys in the tournament get to roll with royce on a regular basis?? how many of them get to roll with rickson, renzo, royler or any of the other gracies?? cuz i'm sure he has. and besides if he beat a black belt he should be a black belt. the gracies, most anyway, seem to have a tendency to hold their kids back until they're well past ready for the next belt level so they can say, in helios own words from choke, "he's like all my sons, invincible." i don't deny he's good. he's probably much better than me. but i'm not impressed with anyone who loses in the 2nd round of a no name tournament. everyones making a big deal of this because he's a gracie. if it had been a no name guy who did the same thing, no one would care.
